ClassNK approves LNG carrier equiped with wind propulsion

AI Summary

ClassNK has granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) for a membrane-type LNG carrier equipped with the ‘Wind Challenger,’ a hard sail wind propulsion system.

According to ClassNK, this marks a significant milestone as it is the world’s first AiP for an LNG carrier utilizing a Wind-Assisted Propulsion System (WAPS). The vessel is a collaborative effort between Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. and Hanwha Ocean Co., Ltd.

The Wind Challenger is a device developed by MOL and Oshima Shipbuilding that converts wind energy to propulsive force using telescoping hard sails. With the Wind Challenger, the vessel is expected to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by about 7%-16%, depending on the ship route and other conditions.

In issuing the AiP, ClassNK reviewed the conceptual design of the vessel according to its established ‘Rules and Guidance for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships’ and the latest edition of its guidelines for wind-assisted propulsion. After confirming compliance with the necessary safety requirements and risk assessments, ClassNK proceeded with the approval.
