Iraq Advances Land Transport Deals with Jordan and Egypt

AI Summary

Iraq is pursuing the early implementation of its land transport agreements with Jordan and Egypt, alongside efforts to advance the strategic Development Road project linking Iraq with Türkiye. Transport Minister Wahab al-Hassani outlined these priorities on 4th November 2026, highlighting Baghdad’s ongoing efforts to strengthen regional transportation cooperation. Speaking on the sidelines of the 39th session of the Arab Transport Ministers Council in Alexandria, Hassani confirmed that Iraq has several existing agreements with Jordan and Egypt covering land transportation.

As part of the broader bilateral cooperation between the two countries, the Iraqi and Egyptian transport ministries have previously signed a memorandum of understanding covering the land transport of passengers and goods. Hassani also underlined the significance of the Arab transport ministers’ meeting, particularly in view of current regional and international developments. He expressed optimism that the decisions taken during the discussions would translate into practical outcomes in the near future, supporting stronger cooperation across the region’s transportation sector.

Development Road Project Strengthens Regional Connectivity

Beyond the bilateral agreements, Hassani emphasised the strategic importance of the Development Road, describing it as a major infrastructure initiative for Iraq and the wider region. The proposed corridor will extend approximately 1,200 kilometres from the Grand Faw Port in southern Iraq to the Turkish border, incorporating both highway and railway infrastructure. Through Türkiye, the route is expected to provide onward connectivity to European markets, creating an additional channel for regional and international trade. The initiative is designed to strengthen Iraq’s position as a transit hub connecting the Gulf, Asia and Europe, while expanding opportunities for cross-border transportation and commercial movement.

Cooperation on the project has already been formalised through a four-party memorandum of understanding signed by Türkiye, Iraq, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates in Baghdad. The agreement established a framework for collaboration on the Development Road project. Iraq has also outlined plans to commence work on an expansion of the initiative in early 2027. The proposed expansion will include industrial cities connected to the corridor, further developing the infrastructure surrounding the strategic land transport route. Meanwhile, the Grand Faw Port is expected to reach full commercial operating capacity, forming an important component of the wider Development Road network.
