Siemens and SBB Partner to Modernise Swiss Rail Network

Siemens Mobility and Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) have signed a strategic framework agreement to accelerate the digitalization of interlockings across Switzerland, a major move toward building a more modern and efficient rail network. The collaboration centers on Siemens’ Signaling X solution, which transfers interlocking logic to central data centers, placing digital control at the core of railway operations. The project is designed to increase network capacity and help build a sustainable, high-performance transport system.

As part of the agreement, Siemens Mobility will oversee the development and installation of digital interlockings, including both hardware and software components, while also providing training and technical support. The Siemens and SBB agreement run for ten years to start with, and it can be extended three more times for five years each. Maintenance commitments extend to 25 years to ensure uninterrupted and reliable performance. Over the next two decades, approximately 500 interlockings will be upgraded, replacing about 80 percent of existing systems. The commissioning of the first interlockings is expected to take place in 2029, with orders for individual installations being placed progressively throughout the partnership.

Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility GmbH, said: “We are delighted to be shaping the future of the Swiss railway landscape together with SBB. At the heart of this transformation are virtual interlocking systems. With Signaling X, interlocking logic is intelligently shifted to central data centers, digitalizing rail operations from the ground up. This groundbreaking technology not only significantly increases the network’s capacity and reliability, but also decisively contributes to SBB’s climate goals. By providing guaranteed system availability of up to 100 percent, we are helping to achieve our shared goal: more trains running at shorter intervals for passenger and freight transport in Switzerland.”

Siemens Mobility has maintained a strong presence in Switzerland for decades, supporting SBB with expertise across the entire value chain. The company has delivered a wide range of signaling and control projects, including complex systems managed by skilled local teams that handle everything from design and production to commissioning, maintenance, and spare parts logistics. Building on this experience, Siemens Mobility has mapped out a clear migration path to help SBB’s existing systems move toward the new digital architecture. With more than a century of collaboration, Siemens and SBB continue to reinforce their strong partnership across Switzerland’s 3,266-kilometer standard-gauge rail network, which serves both passenger and freight transport.
