Wärtsilä introduces dual fuel technology-based 46DF engine

AI Summary

Finland-based provider of power solutions for the marine industry Wärtsilä has introduced the Wärtsilä 46DF engine that not only offers higher output and low lifecycle costs, but also consumes less fuel.

The Wärtsilä 46DF engine has been developed for the high-output market segment, including cruise ships and ferries, merchant vessels, liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, floating storage and re-gasification unit (FSRUs), and offshore vessels and platforms.

The fuel flexible engine can operate on natural gas, heavy fuel oil, or marine diesel oil.

The fuel flexibility feature is compliant with the most stringent emission standards, including the IMO Tier II and III exhaust emission regulations, and offers reduced operational expenses and ensures uninterrupted operation.

The Wärtsilä 46DF engine comes in two different versions; high-efficiency for significantly lower fuel consumption with a cylinder power of 1045kW, and high-power that provides a cylinder power of 1145kW with engine thermal efficiency.

For LNG carriers, the Wärtsilä 46DF can offer fuel savings of 20t a day, whereas when fuelled by gas, the engine reduces sulphur oxide and carbon dioxide emissions.

Wärtsilä ship power four-stroke sales vice-president Lars Anderson said that, with this newly launched product, Wärtsilä has raised the industry standard even higher, since it offers lower specific fuel consumption, both in gas and diesel fuel mode, remarkably higher output, and extremely attractive lifecycle costs compared to any other alternative currently available on the market.
