Dow Adhesives Pass New Flammability Standards for Rail Applications

AI Summary

Recent flammability tests show three grades of Dow BETAMATE structural adhesives pass the 2018 EN45545-2 Norm for use in railway vehicles. In accordance with test standards, the adhesives were applied in conjunction with steel and tested for window assemblies, interior and exterior surfaces, floor structures, and other general interior and exterior bonding applications. All tests were conducted jointly by the Bodo Möller Chemie Group and Dow Automotive Systems.

“Fire protection is extremely important,” said Frank Haug, Chairman and Managing Director of Bodo Möller Chemie GmbH, a leading BETAMATE distributor to rail manufacturers. “However, the vehicle manufacturer needs guidelines on which adhesives are appropriate. For this reason, working in partnership with Dow Automotive Systems, we performed the necessary laboratory experiments to test the combustibility and fire behavior of the adhesives.”

All three products tested, BETAMATE 2700, a two-component structural adhesive, and BETAMATE™ 7120 and BETAMATE 7170 Quick Fix, both one-component adhesives, met the EN45545-2 requirements.

BETAMATE 7170 satisfies the requirements of all three hazard levels (HL) for R1, R7 and R10 for structural bonding including R22 and R23 for interior and exterior sealing. BETAMATE 7120 also fulfills all three HL requirements for R1 and R7 (interior and exterior applications) and for R10, R22 and R23. ™BETAMATE 2700 met the requirements for R22 and R23 (interior and exterior sealing) for all three HL.

“This testing shows that these three BETAMATE™ adhesives can be used for the construction of railway vehicles now and in the future,” said Frank Billotto, Market Development Manager for Elastic and Structural Adhesives at Dow Automotive Systems. “Manufacturers can use these adhesives and be confident that they will meet critical fire protection norms.”
