Lufthansa cancels 900 flights as strike action bites

AI Summary

German flag-carrier Lufthansa has cancelled more than 900 flights today as cabin crew walk out on strike.

Lufthansa said 929 of the 3,000 planned scheduled flights to or from Frankfurt, Dusseldorf and Munich would be cancelled today, affecting 113,000 passengers.

However, about 70 per cent of its normal services would operate.

The move comes as UFO flight attendants’ union called members out on strike in a dispute over pensions.

The latest stoppage at the carrier is part of rolling industrial action the union threatened to continue until Friday.

“Lufthansa has today reaffirmed that it is ready to resume talks,” it said in a statement.

Frankfurt and Dusseldorf were to be hit by work stoppages from 03.30 to 22:00, and Munich from 03.30am to 23:00, the union said on its website on Sunday.

“Lufthansa apologises to customers who will be affected by this strike tomorrow,” added a statement.

“The company will inform its customers of developments as soon as possible and, if possible, offer them alternative travel options.”

Lufthansa subsidiaries Germanwings, Eurowings, Lufthansa CityLine, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Air Dolomiti and Brussels Airlines are not affected by the strike.
