Suez Canal Authority (SCA) Chairman Osama Rabie met with US Chargé d’Affaires in Cairo Robert Silverman on 2nd September 2026 to address strategies for strengthening the partnership between Egypt and the United States. The high-level discussion, held at the SCA headquarters in Ismailia, included US Naval Attaché Captain William Goutin and US Embassy Economic Officer Andrew Duller.
Advancing Maritime Infrastructure and Services
The primary focus of the meeting centered on Egypt-U.S. maritime cooperation, specifically regarding the modernization of shipyards, the expansion of maritime services, and the integration of digital transformation technologies. Rabie emphasized that the Suez Canal maintains a unique status within the international shipping community, providing continuous navigation support regardless of regional geopolitical factors.
Strategic Importance to Global Trade
He highlighted the strategic role of the Suez Canal as a vital link for maintaining the stability of global supply chains and enabling trade flows between East and West. Despite regional disruptions, the canal has successfully maintained uninterrupted operations. To support this, the authority has launched a new package of maritime services tailored to address both regular and emergency client requirements.
Infrastructure Development and Future Growth
Rabie highlighted ongoing efforts to localize the maritime industry in Egypt. This initiative includes significant expansion in the production of marine units, which is expected to bolster the authority’s capacity to provide specialized support and increase export opportunities.
Enhancing Navigational Safety
Recent infrastructure projects have focused on upgrading the navigational channel. Rabie said that the expansion of the southern sector has improved navigational safety in that region by 28 percent.
Silverman reaffirmed the strength of the bilateral relationship, noting the importance of the canal to both U.S. interests and the flow of global trade between Europe and Asia. The U.S. delegation expressed a clear interest in furthering Egypt-U.S. maritime cooperation through collaborative projects in shipyards and the implementation of advanced digital transformation systems.
