Bunker fuel spill as two maritime vessels collide in Singapore Strait

AI Summary

Liberia-flagged containership Hammonia Thracium and the Panama-flagged chemical tanker Zoey collided in the Singapore Strait off Sebarok Island on 10 February.

The impact of the collision resulted in damage to one of the bunker tanks of Hammonia Thracium, causing a spillage of around 80t of bunker fuel.

Following the spillage report, the maritime and port authority (MPA) of Singapore dispatched four patrol craft to deal with the incident and alerted oil spill response companies to support the clean-up efforts.

MPA’s port operations control centre said they gave traffic information to both vessels before the accident and also alerted the Zoey to Hammonia’s crossing of the traffic lane.

This bunker spill is the third within the last 13 days in the region.

The other two incidents involved the collision of Hong Kong-flagged chemical tanker Lime Galaxy with China-flagged containership Feihe south of Jurong Island, on 29 January, and the collision of the Panama-flagged containership NYK Themis with the barge AZ Fuzhou at East Keppel Fairway, south of Marina South, on 30 January.

According to MPA, there have been no reports of injuries or delays in port operations and both vessels were in a stable condition outside the Singapore port limits.

MPA is investigating the cause of the collision.

According to Maritime Connector, the 34,705dwt Hammonia Thracium is owned and managed by Germany-based Hammonia Reederei. The 12,124dwt Zoey is owned by Koyo Kaiun Tokyo and managed by Koyo Kaiun Asia.
