Siemens, OMV Deploy SICHARGE FLEX Charging System in Austria

AI Summary

Siemens eMobility and OMV have taken another step toward expanding charging infrastructure for electric trucks and cars with the commissioning of the world’s first SICHARGE FLEX charging system at the OMV station in Kufstein, Austria. The system was officially put into operation in the presence of Provincial Councilor René Zumtobel, representatives from Siemens eMobility and OMV, and key customers. OMV is serving as a pilot customer and became the first user of the new charging system, which Siemens unveiled in October 2025. The deployment of the SICHARGE FLEX system further supports the expansion of high-power charging infrastructure at an important European transportation location.

With the new high-power charging system, OMV is adding further electric mobility options along a major European transportation corridor, with a particular focus on heavy-duty electric vehicles. The SICHARGE FLEX charging system is designed as a decentralized solution that combines modularity, scalability, and flexibility for both depots and public charging applications. Its power output can range from 480 kW to 1.68 MW, enabling the system to be adapted to different operating scenarios and the increasing requirements of individual locations. OMV operates as a Charge Point Operator (CPO) and Mobility Service Provider (MSP) in several European markets. Its charging network currently covers Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania.

Kufstein location supports heavy-duty electric transport

The Kufstein station has been selected because of its position along the Brenner Route, a major transportation corridor connecting Germany and Italy. The site has been designed with truck drivers in mind. Alongside the new OMV eMotion charging infrastructure, the station provides services including showers, restaurants, and washing machines. Through this combination, OMV is bringing together high-power charging infrastructure and services tailored to the requirements of freight transport.

The SICHARGE FLEX system at Kufstein initially provides four charge points for passenger cars and two charge points for trucks. Each of these charging points has a capacity of up to 400 kW. During the next phase, four additional truck charge points will be installed. These will provide power outputs ranging from 600 kW to 1,200 kW through MCS, helping to reduce charging times. A modern electric truck equipped with a 620-kWh battery, for example, can be charged from 20 percent to 80 percent in about 45 minutes. This charging capability can also allow drivers to make use of their legally mandated rest breaks. The system’s fully dynamic power distribution enables available charging power to be allocated between connected vehicles according to their requirements.

Siemens and OMV highlight scalable charging solution

“SICHARGE FLEX is a scalable solution that can be precisely configured for a variety of use cases – from logistics depots to public charging facilities for cars and trucks. In cooperation with OMV, we are demonstrating how this new generation of charging infrastructure works in practice,” said Markus Mildner, CEO of Siemens eMobility.

“The new high-power charging facility in Kufstein marks another important step in the expansion of our charging infrastructure. Heavy-duty electric vehicles, in particular, require powerful and reliably available charging options along major transportation routes. Kufstein’s location on the Brenner corridor makes it an ideal site. Together with Siemens, we are creating a solution that meets our customers’ needs while also demonstrating what the future of mobility could look like at our locations,” said Peter Vysny, VP of International Operations & eMobility at OMV.

Additional SICHARGE FLEX systems planned in Austria

OMV is continuing its efforts to expand high-power charging infrastructure and has already ordered SICHARGE FLEX charging systems for additional locations in Austria. Delivery and commissioning of these systems are scheduled for the coming months. The charging hardware will also be supported by SIFINITY Control, Siemens’ cloud-based monitoring and management solution. The platform provides transparency while supporting reliable and efficient operations. Combined with the services offered by Siemens eMobility, the solution is intended to support a high level of availability as OMV expands its charging infrastructure.
