KONE wins contract for Qatar light rail system

KONE, the global elevator and escalator supplier, has won an order for 139 elevators, escalators and moving walkways, which will be installed at the Lusail Light Rail Transport System in Qatar.

The railway transportation project is currently under construction in the new city of Lusail, which is north of Doha. Developed by Qatar Rail, the new sustainable transport system is expected to accommodate the 250,000 inhabitants of Lusail and serve 40,000 daily users.

The network will comprise 10km of underground track, four main tram lines, and ground level and elevated tracks, along with passenger stations. In the future, the rail network will also connect to Doha’s metro network, which will be located at an interchange on Khor highway.

Therefore, to ensure that passengers will be able to smoothly move and transfer across the network, KONE will install 49 elevators, 82 escalators and eight horizontal moving walkways.

“We are extremely honoured to have won this project,” says Mark Bayyari, managing director for Qatar at KONE. “With our solid understanding of the passenger requirements in the public transport sector and our eco-efficient equipment, we look forward to ensuring a smooth and seamless transit experience for the commuters.”

The Lusail Light Rail Transit System has been designed by Atkins, the global architectural firm, and is being built by Qatari Diar Vinci Construction Grand Projects Company (QDVC).
