A major milestone in international aviation cooperation was established on 19th August 2026 when Qatar Airways Cargo opened its Asia-Pacific regional office in Hong Kong and formalized a strategic partnership with the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK). The move represents a significant expansion of the airline’s operational footprint in one of the world’s most important aviation hubs.
Strategic Memorandum Advances Hong Kong Air Cargo Hub Development
The Secretary for Transport and Logistics, Mable Chan, said, “I am delighted to welcome Qatar Airways Cargo’s setting up of a regional office in Hong Kong, which fully reflects the airline’s confidence in and recognition of Hong Kong as an international aviation hub. Hong Kong and Qatar have long enjoyed a profound foundation of collaboration in aviation. The MOU signed today is of great strategic significance and will bring the partnership between the two places to new heights.”
Enhanced Cargo Network Connectivity
The air connectivity collaboration enables Hong Kong International Airport to capture greater cargo flow tonnage while leveraging the global carrier’s extensive network to enhance air connectivity with emerging markets. The partnership specifically focuses on developing routes to regions with significant growth potential, including South America, Central Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
Praising the Hong Kong International Airport as Asia’s premier air cargo hub, Senior Vice President Cargo Sales of Qatar Airways Cargo, Eric Wilson, said, “By establishing our regional office in Hong Kong and deepening our partnership with the AAHK, the group is perfectly positioned to leverage Hong Kong’s strengths to further connect the global network with the vibrant markets of Asia and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.”

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government remains committed to supporting the long-term growth of Hong Kong’s aviation industry. To further strengthen Hong Kong’s position as an international aviation hub, the Civil Aviation Department has extended exemption measures for non-scheduled cargo flights while encouraging airlines to increase the frequency of scheduled cargo services and establish new cargo routes. At the same time, the government will continue to collaborate closely with the AAHK to expand the aviation network and capitalize on emerging growth opportunities across key markets.
