Kyrgyzstan and Switzerland have signed an intergovernmental agreement covering the international road transportation of passengers and cargo, establishing a legal framework for road links between the two countries. The Kyrgyz Ministry of Transport and Communications announced the agreement in a press release published on 13th August 2026.
The document was signed during a meeting between Minister of Transport and Communications Talantbek Soltobaev and Swiss Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan Siroko Messerli.
“This document establishes the necessary legal framework for international road transport between Kyrgyzstan and Switzerland, as well as for the organization of transit transport through the territories of the parties,” the press release says.
Agreement Aims to Expand Transport and Economic Links
The Kyrgyz Ministry of Transport and Communications said the agreement is expected to strengthen transport cooperation while contributing to trade and economic ties, business, and tourism between Kyrgyzstan and Switzerland. The two sides also pointed to the potential for the agreement to improve mobility for citizens and support the continued development of road transport.
Soltobaev described the signing as an important step toward further developing transport cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Switzerland. During the meeting, officials also discussed the joint efforts of the competent authorities in both countries to prepare and coordinate the agreement.
Switzerland Added to Kyrgyzstan’s Road Transport Network
Kyrgyzstan’s road transport sector plays a key role in the country’s international trade, with its landlocked geography making cross-border road connections important for reaching regional and international markets. The country has continued developing transport connections with neighboring states and wider Eurasian routes, while road freight remains particularly relevant for trade with countries that are not directly connected to Kyrgyzstan by rail.
The international road transport agreement with Switzerland adds a European destination to this network and establishes a legal basis for bilateral and transit road transport. Such agreements regulate areas including access for carriers, transport operations, and the movement of passengers and goods, providing clearer conditions for international road operators. For Kyrgyzstan, the expansion of bilateral transport agreements can support the diversification of trade routes and strengthen connectivity between Central Asia and European markets.
