Lineas Opens A New Rail Link Connecting Belgium And Italy

AI Summary

A new intermodal train link has been established between Belgium and Italy. Lineas operates the new connection, which links North Sea Port with Piadena as a major intermodal train gateway to Italy. The train will run five times a week between the Interface Terminal in the Dutch-Belgian North Sea Port and the Pesanti terminal in Piadena, which is located in the heart of the Milano, Verona, and Bologna triangle. It can transport 15,000 containers from the road to the rail.

Belgium-Italy demand rises

The demand for train transportation between Italy and Belgium is steadily increasing, as per the Belgian railway operator. It started running the everyday Ghent-Segrate intermodal train last year, and it has so far transported 10,000 cargo containers. As a result, another service has been added, this time linking the cross-border port.

Consumers are more willing to use smart, low-carbon railway systems to decarbonize their supply chains, and that is exactly what they want to assist them with. They are now generating capacity for an additional 15,000 containers to be switched to rail, in addition to the 70 trains they presently run between Belgium and Italy. Lineas’ Chief Commercial Officer, Lars Redeligx, stated that with 9 times reduced carbon emissions, they keep over 9,000 tonnes of CO2 out of the environment every year. This is an actual climate win.

Lineas is the first carrier to activate the Pesanti terminal for intermodal volumes, making it a new entrance to Italy. With the Segrate terminal nearing capacity, Piadena, which is 150 kilometres from Segrate, serves as a welcome second entry to Italy. The terminal at Piadena is ideally placed in a tile and steel-producing region.
