Public transport systems around the world are getting ready for an electrification revolution, and ABB is leading the charge with its comprehensive suite of solutions, showcased at Busworld 2019 in Brussels from 18 to 23 October 2019 (Hall 9, Stand 940).

Adoption of e-mobility solutions is the primary focus of many public transport operators as they look to become more sustainable and reduce greenhouse gases and inner-city CO2 levels. The transport industry is responsible for around a quarter of Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions.

“Electric vehicles are a critical part of the mobility revolution,” says Frank Muehlon, Head of ABB’s global business for EV Charging Infrastructure. “As urban areas continue to become more densely populated, developing more sustainable public transit systems will be vital to reducing their carbon footprint and environmental impact. At ABB, we’re committed to developing practical, cost-effective and scalable solutions to facilitate the uptake of more sustainable transport options and enable a more seamless transition towards safer, greener cities.”

On display will be ABB’s high-power HVC 100C and HVC 150C depot chargers and ABB’s latest Panto Up charger, all of which are underpinned by the digital solutions of the ABB AbilityTM portfolio and come with ABB Charger Care to optimize uptime and reliability. Indeed, by connecting chargers, service solutions and people, ABB has been able to diagnose more than 90 percent of the service cases remotely, solving over 60 percent of these cases without any site intervention.

High power connector chargers

Specifically designed to charge larger fleets of electric vehicles in the most optimized way, ABB offers sequential charging for the 100kW and 150kW chargers with a CCS connector. A single power cabinet is paired with up to three depot charge boxes. After the first vehicle has finished charging, the next vehicle will start charging automatically.

ABB’s modular systems provides efficient grid connection for the charging infrastructure. This solution was recently adopted by German public transport operator Hamburger Hochbahn AG, which has opened Germany’s first fully electric bus depot.

To ensure high availability and reliability, medium voltage (MV) SafePlus switchgear, which features a completely sealed system for improved performance and personal safety, dry transformers and the low voltage (LV) switchgear was doubled-up to deliver seamless charging between stations.

Pantograph Up chargers

Panto Up has been designed to provide a flexible, efficient and fully automated charging solution for larger fleets of electric buses, where limited depot space has driven the decision to select buses with a roof mounted pantograph. Leveraging ABB’s sequential charging solution, Panto Up is flexible and easy-to-install, and with a power range of 50-150kW per vehicle its ideal for charging multiple vehicles in a depot overnight.

Panto Up also delivers a power range of 150-600kW for ‘opportunity charging’ at end stops of bus lines during the day, providing an ideal solution to ensure zero-emission public transport without impacting normal operation.

TOSA flash charging

ABB will also highlight its flash-charging system, the world´s fastest EV-charging system for e-buses, that tops up the battery in just seconds while passengers get on and off the bus. Taking less than a second for the overhead arm to connect, the solution brings speed and flexibility to battery charging, making it the ideal solution for high-capacity and high-frequency routes.

In Geneva, Switzerland, ABB’s TOSA is already an established e-bus technology. It has operated for more than 500,000 kilometers, transported millions of passengers and saved more than 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. In September, the system was also inaugurated in Nantes, France, to operate on 22 e-buses, and recently ABB and King Long Motor Group signed an agreement to jointly develop an e-bus based on the flash-charger system for China’s booming battery-electric public transportation market.

Drivetrains and energy storage

Also being showcased by ABB is its efficient, low and zero carbon drivetrains with onboard energy storage systems – solutions that are integral to achieving sustainable mobility. Designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions on roads or railways, ABB’s Lithium-ion based energy storage system BORDLINE® ESS offers unparalleled cycle life, high charging power and excellent low temperature performance. This will also include ABB’s e-mobility drivetrain, an electrification platform that strives to address the emission and noise issues typically caused by commercial diesel vehicles in urban areas.

ABB operates in more than 100 markets worldwide, with experienced local organizations to ensure the highest levels of service for customers.
