CPB Contractors, a subsidiary of CIMIC Group, has been selected by the government of South Australia for the construction of three regional transport infrastructure projects under the Port Wakefield to Port Augusta Regional Projects Alliance (RPA).

The projects will be delivered in collaboration with the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure, Aurecon Australasia and GHD.

The infrastructure projects will include the Joy Baluch AM Bridge Duplication in Port Augusta, the Port Wakefield Overpass and Highway Duplication and the Augusta Highway Planning Project located between Port Augusta and Port Wakefield.

The three projects are expected to bring revenue of AUD236.8m ($154.62m) to CPB Contractors. Work on the projects will begin this year and is set to be completed in 2022.

Joy Baluch AM Bridge Duplication project is an initiative between the Australian and South Australian governments. The project will connect the National Land Transport Network at Port Augusta across the Spencer Gulf for the commuter, commercial and freight vehicles for the northern region. It is also an important tourist connection to the Eyre Peninsula, northern South Australia and beyond.

The duplication of the bridge is expected to improve road safety and efficiency for all users while improving freight productivity. The Port Wakefield Overpass and Highway Duplication Project is also a joint initiative between the Australian and South Australian governments.

Usually, 8,800 vehicles move on the Port Wakefield Road every day, but the traffic could increase nearly 16,000 during holiday peak periods, resulting in higher holiday traffic volumes at the intersection of the Copper Coast Highway.

The Augusta Highway and Copper Coast Highway intersection north of Port Wakefield is considered to be one of the busiest regional road intersections in the state and it is a national and regional link between Adelaide, Port Augusta and the Yorke Peninsula.

With the new project in place, traffic flow could be improved, while reducing congestions for all road users, particularly during peak travel times and on public holidays.

The project will include two lanes in each direction through the Port Wakefield township with provisions for safe U-turn movements.

The dual carriageway will be realigned through the Port Wakefield township, allowing for increased parking and landscaping opportunities with safer vehicle and pedestrian movements.

CIMIC Group CEO Juan Santamaria said: “CPB Contractors will draw on its proven capability to efficiently deliver these major road projects through an alliance style contract, consistent with our strategy of effectively managing risk.

“These three upgrades will provide improved road safety, reduced traffic congestion and greater network resilience for the communities of regional South Australia.”
