European Commission Clean Industrial Deal is welcome by UITP. As the road map notes, by advocating “New rules Facilitating Aid for a shift towards Sustainable land Transport Modes,” the roadmap recognises the critical part transport plays in increasing the EU’s competitiveness and promoting decarbonisation. UITP responds to the Deal on Clean Industry
UITP calls for the integration of local public transport and its supply chain as major elements of a sustainable and competitive industrial future if it is to meet its strategic objectives. Quoting from UITP’s press release,“UITP fully endorses Executive Vice-President Ribera’s focus on a just transition that promotes quality jobs, empowers individuals, and strengthens social cohesion. Public transport plays a key role in this transition, providing stable employment across multiple sectors and supporting the development of green skills essential for a sustainable economy. With over 2 million people employed across the EU, it remains one of the largest local employers. The integration of a Sustainable Transport Investment Plan is another welcome development, particularly its focus on accelerating the deployment of recharging infrastructure”.
In this sense, UITP reflects Commissioner Hoekstra’s need for simplification: the faster deployment of zero-emission vehicles and the required recharging infrastructure depend on the streamlined administrative and regulatory processes.
UITP is also happy to see the Clean Industrial Deal incorporates several of its main suggestions, including the use of ETS income as a major tool to help decarbonisation. UITP advises to direct these funds towards quickening the growth and innovation in the sector.
