Iraq is moving forward with plans to establish a network of regular maritime passenger routes that will connect the nation with Iran, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. This strategic initiative is designed to revitalize Iraq’s maritime transport sector and foster enhanced regional tourism. The Ministry of Transport has indicated that these new Iraq maritime routes will commence once all necessary technical and administrative prerequisites are met, in close collaboration with relevant authorities both domestically and within the neighboring countries.
A comprehensive plan has been developed to operationalize these regional maritime transport services. This plan involves leveraging an expanded fleet of boats and ferries. The Ministry of Transport currently manages 40 boats and ferries as part of its river transport program. In a recent enhancement, the fleet has been augmented with 15 new boats and three ferries. These upgraded vessels are intended to offer modern and secure passenger transportation, simultaneously providing a boost to Iraq’s expanding tourism industry. The majority of these new vessels will be allocated to passenger and tourism-focused Iraq maritime routes, linking Iraq to Kuwait, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Iran.
The commencement of these services is contingent upon the finalization of all operational approvals, stringent safety procedures, and cross-border coordination. This meticulous approach is aimed at ensuring that the maritime passenger routes adhere to international maritime safety standards. The anticipated connections are expected to streamline both tourism and commercial exchanges between Iraq and its neighboring nations. The Ministry of Transport anticipates that these new maritime routes will present an economical and convenient alternative for regional travel, particularly for leisure purposes.
Beyond tourism, the project is also poised to improve mobility for official delegations and religious visitors. Furthermore, it is expected to strengthen economic ties with the Gulf states and Iran by enhancing passenger connectivity.
