Germany, Switzerland tap Voestalpine for 500 Mn Euro Order

German national rail operator Deutsche Bahn (DB) and Swiss Schweizerische Bundesbahnen (SBB) have awarded Voestalpine collectively a 500 Mn Euro order, reinforcing the company’s position in railway infrastructure system solutions. The agreements span a wide range of services, including the delivery of rail and turnout systems, alongside signaling technology and advanced monitoring applications. Following its recent work on Austria’s “Koralmbahn” and Egypt’s first high-speed line, the “Green Line,” these latest contracts further underscore the continued confidence of leading international rail operators in voestalpine’s expertise. The scale of the 500 Mn Euro order highlights the company’s expanding footprint across key European rail modernization initiatives.

In Germany, Deutsche Bahn is preparing to invest more than EUR 23 billion in 2026 to upgrade national rail infrastructure, with VoestalpineRailway Systems playing a central role. Under the 500 Mn Euro order, the company will supply premium rails and turnout components for major projects, including the renovation of Frankfurt main station and the enhancement of high-performance corridors such as the Hamburg–Berlin line. Beyond manufacturing, VoestalpineRailway Systems will also deliver comprehensive services across the country, covering training, maintenance, and logistics. This includes the provision of welded long rails and fully pre-assembled turnout systems, which are transported directly to construction sites to streamline project execution.

The company has already demonstrated its capabilities through its involvement in refurbishing the 70 km-long Riedbahn between Frankfurt and Mannheim, one of Europe’s busiest rail corridors. For this project, Voestalpine supplied rails produced in Donawitz, while a significant portion of installed turnouts incorporated its proprietary technology.

In Switzerland, Schweizerische Bundesbahnen has also deepened its collaboration with VoestalpineRailway Systems through a framework agreement extending up to 20 years, aimed at advancing digitalization across its rail network. As part of this engagement, Voestalpine will deliver axle counting systems that determine whether track sections are occupied, enhancing operational safety and efficiency. The agreement also includes service contracts for diagnostic systems and cybersecurity solutions, alongside the deployment of standardized signaling technology (EULYNX). Together, these initiatives, anchored by the 500 Mn Euro order, reinforce voestalpine’s role in supporting modern, high-performance rail systems across Europe.
