The first hydrogen-powered train in India has successfully completed the trial run in Jind, Haryana. It went on to cover a 20-km stretch between Jind and Lalit Khera, clocking a speed of 70 km/h. Testing is going to continue for another week.
The first hydrogen-powered train in India has for sure gone on to mark a major step forward for green rail travel on March 03, 2026, with a smooth trial run in the state of Haryana. The train started its journey from Jind railway station at around 8.30 am and thereafter travelled to Lalit Khera before taking a U-turn and coming back to the base.
Plying with eight coaches, this hydrogen train clocked a top speed of 70 km/h on the railway track. The trial goes on to cover a total distance of around 20 kilometers and happens to be a part of the ongoing testing phase, which is going to continue through the next week.
It is well to be noted that railway officials and loco pilots, along with the RPF personnel, were all on board at the time of the run.
SMOOTH MORNING TEST FROM JIND
Notably, the hydrogen train left the Jind railway station at 8.30 am, having loco pilots on board operating the service. Other railway staff, along with RPF jawans, were also on board the train in order to track the safety and operations. The train had eight bogies attached and ran steadily on the track and also maintained a speed of around 70 kmph.
Officials said that the train traveled towards Lalit Khera railway station but turned back before reaching it, thereby returning safely back to the Jind railway station after completing the trial distance, which was planned.
TESTING TO GO ON FOR A WEEK
According to the railway sources, the hydrogen train is at present in the testing stage, and there are going to be similar trial runs, which shall continue over the next week in order to evaluate the performance and safety as well as the technical systems. Apparently, if the trials remain successful throughout the next few days, the hydrogen train is most likely to be completely introduced on to the railway track.
Once it gets the clearance, the train is all set to operate on the Jind to Sonipat route.
HYDROGEN PLANT IN JIND
Importantly, the officials went on to share that this happens to be the only hydrogen train in the country, and its hydrogen plant is built in Jind itself. This goes on to make the town a very prominent center for the hydrogen rail project in India.
Notably, the successful trial is being regarded as an early but significant step towards much cleaner railway operations, with hydrogen-powered trains looking to reduce the dependence on diesel on certain routes.
WHAT WAS SEEN ON THE GROUND
As per the first visuals from the site, the hydrogen train was indeed moving smoothly on the track, and the railway teams closely monitored each and every detail.
There were extra visuals of the train that were recorded at the time of the trial run, which was as part of the regular documentation.
