The Port of Saint-Malo Goes on to Start Green Hydrogen Trial

The port of Saint-Malo is home to StatMobHy, which is a green hydrogen station for land-based port users, from March 30 to April 30, 2026.

With the help of the Brittany region, this project aims to get the ports of the region to start green hydrogen trial through demonstrating that it can be distributed, raising awareness among port workers, and helping them learn how to handle hydrogen safely and technically so that the energy transition of ports can take place faster.

The Brittany Region has been more committed to the energy transition since 2021, when it released its hydrogen roadmap. By 2023, it released an ambitious port strategy for the next few years. It is well to be noted that one of the axes is specifically aimed at making the Breton ports major players in the transition, creating alternative fuels, including green hydrogen.

There are two things at stake – getting rid of carbon in both land and sea activities. Even though there are a lot of ship design projects going on, port land-based uses are having a difficult time getting started in Brittany because of high costs, a lack of infrastructure and operational problems like skills and training, safety, and regulations. Even though there are more land vehicles and distribution equipment that are available.

The Brittany Region is starting StatMobHy, a first-of-its-kind experiment that is taking place in the port of Saint-Malo from the end of March to the end of April 2026 aimed with the intent to start green hydrogen trial.

StatMobHy – Teach, show, and also raise awareness

The goal of the StatMobHy experiment is to make port workers more aware of hydrogen, help them deal with technical and safety issues, and show that it is possible to distribute green hydrogen at ports.

Towards the direction of a generalization of hydrogen’s uses in ports

StatMobHy is a real step toward making land port activities in Brittany less carbon-intensive. The experiment aims to create a ripple effect and get ready for the deployment of sustainable solutions at all regional ports through involving public and private actors as well as user actors. The experiment might be done again in Lorient and Brest, depending on how well it goes.

A group effort in Saint-Malo

The region has teamed up with a number of partners to work on this project –

  • Edeis Port Saint Malo Cancale is a partner of the region. It runs the station in the region and uses two vehicles.
  • GCK Energy – Gives the station the hydrogen and makes sure it works.
  • Manitou Group – Lending a hydrogen telescopic truck.
  • Brétéché – Offers one Hyundai Nexo and one Peugeot Expert Hydrogen utility
  • GSF – Uses the Manitou handling cart.
  • Energy Observer – Uses the station to fill up a Toyota Mirai and also participate in communication.
  • SDIS 35 steps in when there is a security problem.
  • Captaincy – Port partner for putting the project together.

The region, which is in charge of the project, also runs the station and has three vehicles.
