The Sea Cloud Hussar is a full-rigged, three-mast passenger ship owned by Sea Cloud Cruises. Under construction at the Factoria de Naval Marin shipyard in Spain, the $100m ship was expected to be launched in 2010. In July 2010, construction was halted after the shipyard filed for bankruptcy. The ship is in the final stages of completion but the exact launch date is unknown.

According to Sea Cloud Cruises, the Hussar will be the largest hand-sailed cruise ship ever built and will provide a five-star level of comfort. After an inaugural cruise from Athens, Greece, to Larnaca, Cyprus, the Hussar will sail out of Dubai to the Arabian Gulf.

The Hussar will be a sister ship to the Sea Cloud and Sea Cloud II and will be the fourth ship in the Sea Cloud Cruises fleet. The third ship on the company’s fleet is the River Cloud II.

Design

The 3,000t ship is 445.23ft long, 56.43ft wide and has a total sail surface area of over 4,000m².The Hussar will have 27 sails with a total area of 42,771ft² and will be able to cruise at a maximum speed of 14kts. The height of the main mast above waterline and above deck will be 2883.85ft and 157.50ft, respectively. In addition to its sails, the ship will be equipped with a diesel-electric engine supplied by Siemens.

Accommodation

The ship will have accommodation for 136 passengers and 90 crew. It will have 69 outside cabins (43 deluxe cabins, 23 junior suites and three owner suites). The junior and owner suites come with a verandah and all cabins will be equipped with entertainment systems.

The deluxe cabins will be furnished with a single bed, a dressing table, a TV, a safe and a small seating arrangement. The bathroom will be fitted with a sink, a shower and a flush toilet.

The junior suites will range from 313ft² to 356ft² and will feature panoramic windows, a walk-in closet, a dressing table, a personal safe, a mini bar and a TV. A queen-size bed will be able to be converted into two single beds.

The owner suites will feature a queen-sized bed, bird’s-eye windows, a sitting area with a sofa, a mini bar, a dressing table, direct email access and a TV set. The bathroom will be more spacious than that of junior suite and the toilet will be separate.

Facilities

The ship’s restaurant, lido bar and bistro will offer panoramic views. Guests will have the option to choose foods from four-course menus, specially created by the ship’s chefs.

A 150ft² spa will be equipped with modern cardio instruments while a Jacuzzi will be located on the sun deck. There will also be facilities for water sports, a swimming platform, treatment rooms, a hydro-massage shower area, a gymnasium, a boutique and a library.

Key players

The ship is being built by Hansa Treuhand Holding. The diesel-electric propulsion system has been provided by MAN-Siemens. Partnership Design will provide the interior fittings. Bohnhoff will supply the ship’s kitchens, pantries and bars. The air vent heads for the ship were supplied by Winteb.
