ADPI receives contract to upgrade Tanzania airport

AI Summary

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Communication (MoIC) and Zanzibar Airport Authority (ZAA) in Tanzania have awarded a contract to France-based Aéroports de Paris Ingénierie (ADPI), as part of the resumption of the airport’s upgrade programme.

The contract primarily focuses on the construction of a second terminal at the Zanzibar airport, also called Abeid Amani Karume International Airport.

ADPI CEO Guillaume Sauvé said: “After designing new terminals for Mayotte and Mauritius international airports, this contract marks a new phase in our development in the Indian Ocean region.”

Construction on the second terminal, which started in February 2011, was halted last year as certain aspects of the project were not in line with guidelines of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

However, authorities of Zanzibar International Airport were not keen on resumption of the project given its strategic importance in the development of tourism on the island.

Under the latest contract, ADPI will facilitate the restarting of the construction work.

The company has adapted the architectural design of the terminal, drawn up layout plans as well as carried out several engineering studies.

The new terminal will be spread across an area of 25,000m², with a capacity to accommodate three million passengers per year.

ADPI will act as project manager during the works through the completion of the project, while Beijing Construction Engineering Group will be the construction company.
