Syria and Belarus have held discussions aimed at deepening bilateral ties through enhanced transport cooperation, with a strong focus on roads, railways, land transport and related industries, according to the Syrian Transport Ministry. During a meeting held on 4th August 2026, Syrian Transport Minister Yarub Badr and Belarusian Ambassador to Syria Yuri Sluka reviewed opportunities to broaden collaboration across several areas linked to the transport sector. Emphasizing Syria’s interest in advancing transport cooperation, Badr said the country is prepared to work more closely with Belarus and benefit from its experience, particularly in road infrastructure, railway systems, land transport and related industries. He explained that the Ministry of Transport currently supervises a number of essential responsibilities, including land transport, roads, railways, vehicle registration and technical inspections, driving licenses, and the movement of goods within Syria and with other countries. Badr also highlighted the bilateral agreement signed in 2004 governing international road transport of passengers and goods between Syria and Belarus. He noted that the ministry is ready to review the agreement and consider amendments or additional provisions that would better serve the interests of both countries while supporting future transport cooperation.
Both Countries Seek Stronger Technical Exchange and Future Coordination
During the meeting, Sluka reaffirmed Belarus’ interest in strengthening cooperation with Syria across multiple sectors, including transport. He said the Belarusian Ministry of Transport and Communications is keen to expand cooperation with its Syrian counterpart. According to Sluka, Belarus is prepared to exchange expertise and collaborate in the manufacturing of trucks, tractors, buses and electric buses, while also working together in road engineering and bridge construction. He further pointed to Belarusian capabilities in road infrastructure and transit transport as areas where cooperation could be strengthened. Looking ahead, both sides agreed to continue coordination regarding an online meeting, exchange a draft agenda, and renew an invitation for a Belarusian delegation to visit Syria. They also underlined the value of maintaining bilateral meetings alongside international conferences and events to improve communication and facilitate the exchange of expertise, particularly in infrastructure and roads. The discussions reflected a shared commitment to expanding transport cooperation as Syria continues efforts to develop its transport sector during recovery and reconstruction.
