MSC, MPA Advance Maritime Digitization and Decarbonization

AI Summary

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has entered into a significant collaboration with Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) through a memorandum of understanding to advance maritime digitization and decarbonization besides innovation and manpower. This agreement underscores a shared commitment to advancing maritime decarbonization while strengthening operational capabilities in the Asia-Pacific region. This landmark agreement arrives during a meaningful milestone year, that is the 30th anniversary of MSC establishing its Asia Regional Office and local office in Singapore.

The collaboration prioritizes maritime decarbonization through concrete operational measures. Both parties will work toward expanding alternative marine fuel solutions, with specific emphasis on bio-liquefied natural gas technologies. This focus addresses the shipping industry’s critical need to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining operational viability. The maritime digitization and decarbonization agreement also includes provisions for exploring new shipping routes and services that enhance regional and global connectivity.

Digital transformation represents a central pillar of this maritime digitization and decarbonization agreement. This component focuses on implementing advanced technologies to improve vessel arrivals and port operations.

Human capital development forms an essential component of the collaboration. The shipping company will support internship and scholarship opportunities through Singapore Maritime Foundation’s Maritime Outreach Network (MaritimeONE) platform, which brings together commercial operators, government agencies, and educational institutions. This tripartite approach aims to address critical talent gaps in the maritime sector and cultivate the next generation of maritime professionals.

Ang Wee Keong, Chief Executive of MPA, highlighted this partnership as a strong collaboration between MPA and MSC in driving sustainability and digitalization in the maritime sector.

“By working together on decarbonization, operational efficiency and talent development, we aim to strengthen Maritime Singapore’s position as a trusted and future-ready global maritime hub,” he added.

Soren Toft, Chief Executive Officer of MSC, admitted that Singapore is a strategically important hub for the company and a key gateway to the broader Asia region.

“MSC and Singapore are closely aligned on the priorities shaping the future of global shipping, and we look forward to deepening this partnership to drive the continued growth and resilience of the maritime industry,” he added.
