DHL-CMA GGM Take Steps for Lower-Carbon Ocean Freight

DHL Global Forwarding, along with CMA CGM, has taken a major step towards decarbonizing the global container transport. Both the companies have agreed to jointly make use of 8,990 metric tons of UCOME second-generation biofuel, helping with an estimated 25,000 metric tons of CO2e well-to-wake emission decrease for ocean freight that is transported under the GoGreen Plus service initiative by DHL. This initiative helps the customers of DHL to prominently decrease the carbon intensity when it comes to their global supply chains while at the same time speeding up the transition of the industry to other marine fuels.

Head of Global Ocean Freight at DHL Global Forwarding, Casper Ellerbaek, said that this partnership marks yet another landmark when it comes to their mission towards low-carbon supply chains. Through making utmost use of sustainable marine fuels, they help their customers attain their climate objectives and also drive real progress when it comes to decarbonization.

By way of GoGreen Plus from DHL and CMA CGM’s ACT+ low-carbon transport offering, the shippers can now go ahead and integrate sustainable maritime transport within their logistics operations and hence attain lower-carbon ocean freight

CMA CGM is going to physically bunker the biofuel throughout its fleet, making sure that the emission reductions are in sync with the Book & Claim approach by DHL. The GoGreen Plus service by DHL helps customers to slash well-to-wake emissions through selecting sustainable marine fuel choices when it comes to their transport, enabling decreases of almost 80% in GHG emissions as compared to the conventional maritime fuel.

While DHL targets to attain net-zero GHG emissions by 2050, Executive Vice President of Shipping, CMA CGM Group, Olivier Nivoix, confirmed that their partnership along with DHL showcases how the collaboration is going to speed up the move towards lower-carbon ocean freight shipping. ACT+ goes on to offer dependable and scalable solutions that are backed by their fleet designed for alternative fuels. CMA CGM, which is committed to Net Zero Carbon by 2050, has already gone ahead and cut the carbon intensity when it comes to its shipping activities by 57% ever since 2008 and is also investing pretty heavily in terms of alternative fuels as well as dual-fuel vessels.

Both the companies are going to continue to explore opportunities in order to scale up the lower-carbon fuel use and also come up with collaborative approaches in order to decarbonize the global supply chains.

GoGreen Plus products by DHL go on to offer decarbonized solutions throughout the core offerings of DHL by way of leveraging sustainable fuels along with low-carbon tech. GoGreen Plus products are based upon true value chain decarbonization. This gets enabled due to the book & claim approach. Book & claim, apparently, helps DHL to go ahead and directly replace the fossil fuels with sustainable fuels in the network of the logistic company and also allocate environmental advantages to the paying customers, even if their shipments are not physically transported along with the assets through using these fuels. It is well to be noted that GoGreen Plus enables the customers of DHL to decrease their indirect Scope 3 emissions when it comes to their value chain arising from the upstream as well as downstream transportation and also distribution. It also enables customers with voluntary reporting of greenhouse gas – GHG emissions and, at the same time, progress against their decarbonization objectives.
