Singapore Changi Airport has reported a 9.4% year-on-year increase in its passenger traffic in August 2013, handling 4.68 million passengers during the month.

Air traffic movements included a total of 29,600 landings and take-offs, an increase of 8.2% compared to August 2012.

In terms of airfreight, the airport processed 151,000t of cargo in August, a slight decrease of 0.5% year-on-year.

An extra long weekend that included both the Hari Raya Puasa and National Day public holidays in Singapore boosted the travel demand during the month.

The airport witnessed a strong increase in travel to and from neighbouring countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia, which also celebrated the Hari Raya festival, while there was a double-digit increase in traffic between Singapore and China, and Singapore and Japan.

Passenger traffic increased 6.6% to 53 million, while aircraft traffic rose by 5.2% to 336,100.

As of 1 September 2013, more than 100 airlines operate at the airport, connecting Singapore to 250 cities in about 60 countries,
A new bilateral air services agreement between Singapore and Indonesia allowed various carriers to offer additional services in August and September.

A ninth daily service was added by Garuda Indonesia to Jakarta, and the airline also upgraded four of its frequencies from the smaller Boeing 737-800 to the bigger Airbus 330.

Tigerair Mandala increased frequency from three to four times per day between Singapore and Jakarta, which is the second busiest international route in the world.

SilkAir started a three-times-a-week service to Makassar, AirAsia has introduced two daily services to Medan, and Tigerair commenced a daily service to Bandung, a new route for the airline.
