DP World Invests £170M in Container Tech at London Gateway

DP World has announced a £170 million investment in container handling technology at its London Gateway logistics hub, marking a big step in automating and digitalising port operations.

Central to this project is the Empty Superstack, a new system designed to handle empty containers. Using High Bay Storage (HBS) technology, it can store 20- and 40-foot empty containers up to 16 tiers high inside a fully enclosed, automated facility. The system boosts yard capacity, improves safety, and makes operations more efficient.

The technology comes from BOXBAY, a joint venture between DP World and Germany’s SMS group. The setup uses fully electric stacker cranes that pick up and deliver containers automatically, with precise handling every time. The modular Empty Superstack is designed to integrate effortlessly into existing port operations, requiring no modifications to landside or seaside interfaces. By moving several tiers of empty containers from the automated stacking crane (ASC) yard, the system cuts down on rehandling and housekeeping. That lets the ASCs work more smoothly, speeds up truck turnaround times, and helps the terminal run more efficiently and sustainably.

The BOXBAY Empty Superstack will be installed at London Gateway’s new all-electric Berth 4 and can hold up to 27,000 TEU. It is expected to bring clear improvements in safety, operational efficiency, and environmental performance. The project should take just over two years to complete.

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, said: “BOXBAY technology represents a leap forward in how ports manage container storage. It is scalable, automated and sustainable. By bringing this ingenious design to London Gateway, we are introducing advanced technology that will unlock faster throughput and contribute to higher safety standards.”

Stephen Whittingham, Executive Vice President, North Europe, DP World, added: “This £170 million investment underscores DP World’s commitment to innovation at London Gateway. The BOXBAY Empty Superstack will boost reliability for our customers, minimise truck visit times in port, and create a safer, smarter working environment for our people.”

The BOXBAY system has already demonstrated its capabilities at DP World’s Jebel Ali Port in Dubai, handling nearly 500,000 TEU during extensive trials. Its modular construction and energy regeneration features position it as one of the most advanced and sustainable container handling solutions globally.
