The UK’s Highways Agency has commenced a six month project to revamp three bridges on the M3 motorway between the towns of Fleet and Hook in Hampshire.
The refurbishment of the bridges between junction four a (A327) and junction five (A287) is aimed at enabling safe and reliable journeys along the route.
These bridges carry the M3 motorway over Winchfield Road, the South Western Main Railway Line and Totters Lane.
Work under the new project will include replacing joints, improving weather resilience, re-waterproofing, and resurfacing the structures.
The work will require narrow lanes, a contraflow as well as a temporary 50mph speed limit.
In addition, further lane closures will be in place overnight when traffic flows are at their lowest; some overnight closures may also be required.
Highways Agency project sponsor Michael Goddard said: “We will be refurbishing two bridges to prolong the life of the structures and provide the tens of thousands of drivers that rely on this route with safe and reliable journeys.
“We have planned the work to keep three lanes of traffic open to traffic in each direction during peak times to minimise disruption.”
Works are expected to be completed by the first week of August, if weather permits.
Last week, the Highways Agency launched a consultation on the speed limit on part of a £174m upgrade to M3 in Surrey.
