The Rhenus Group is one of four European companies that have been selected to test the new FUSO eCanter electric vehicle from the Daimler Group. The symbolic handover of three environmentally-friendly FUSO eCanter trucks took place in Berlin on 14 December. The vehicles are due to be used in the German capital to supply Rhenus Home Delivery’s end customers from the beginning of January next year.

The FUSO eCanter vehicles will be used in future to deliver goods from different furniture and department stores in the German capital during a two-year test phase – whether this involves furniture, large electrical devices or kitchens. Each vehicle will cover about 50,000 kilometres a year.

“We were the first German company to test a hybrid truck from the Mercedes-Benz innovation fleet in 2011 and, since then, we’ve introduced more eco-friendly measures within our business unit. We’ve initiated paperless deliveries, for example, erected solar panels and installed energy-saving LED lamps at our warehouses. We’re now continuing our sustainable corporate philosophy with the fully electric FUSO eCanter vehicles. Using them in the Berlin urban area makes sense, as the journeys between our central warehouse in Hoppegarten and our end customers in the city centre are short,” Nicolas Rottmann, Managing Director of Rhenus Home Delivery, explains; he was the person to officially receive the vehicles.

Delivering goods in a sustainable manner plays an important role for Rhenus Home Delivery. The FUSO eCanter is one of the third generation of the world’s first light trucks that are purely operated by battery power. By using the three test vehicles, Rhenus will be able to save 137 tonnes of direct CO2 emissions over a period of two years in comparison with conventional trucks. The FUSO eCanter also enables the company to carry a large payload.
