FedEx Confirms First Dedicated Integrated Cargo Terminal

FedEx has put in place its first dedicated integrated cargo terminal in India, thereby committing over ₹2,500 crore so as to build a 300,000 sq ft fully automated air cargo hub located at the newly opened Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). This facility is going to serve as a regional hub that would link India with Southeast Asia, West Asia, and Europe, as well as the United States.

Apparently, this investment marks one of the largest infrastructure commitments by FedEx in India. Once it gets operational, the hub is anticipated to create over 6,000 direct as well as indirect jobs throughout the gamut of logistics, warehousing, and transport, along with other related services.

Speaking on the occasion, Director of Adani Airport Holdings, Jeet Adani, said that this development goes beyond infrastructure. “We are here to break ground on FedEx’s first dedicated integrated cargo terminal in India. Let that sink in for a moment,” he said. He added that one of the world’s largest logistics companies had chosen Navi Mumbai for its first such facility in the country. “This is not just an investment, it is a statement of confidence in India’s economic trajectory, in Maharashtra’s infrastructure vision, and in what this airport represents.”

President and Chief Executive Officer of FedEx, Raj Subramaniam, went on to say that the investment showcases the long-term view of India that the company has. “Investment of over $250 million, demonstrating our confidence in India’s growth trajectory and our commitment to building the capabilities to support it,” he said. He noted that global supply chains have changed significantly in recent years and described the shift as long-term. “We do not see this as a temporary trend but a long-term shift as the world re-globalises.”

Subramaniam went on to add that FedEx has operations across almost 220 countries and territories, thereby placing it in the middle of the global trade flows, and this global network, built over more than 50 years, does give the company a very deep insight into market dynamics.

President of FedEx Middle East, Indian Subcontinent, and Africa – MEISA, Kami Viswanathan, said that the new hub strengthens the position of India when it comes to global trade. He opines that “India’s competitiveness in global trade will increasingly depend on the reliability and speed of its logistics infrastructure. Establishing this hub at NMIA allows us to integrate global network strength with India’s fastest-growing trade corridor, providing greater certainty, speed, and efficiency to customers.”

The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, remarked that at a time when international trade routes are witnessing a transition, the decision by FedEx to invest in Navi Mumbai showcases confidence in India as well as Maharashtra. He went on to note that the company has its operations spread across 650 airports throughout the world and also added that the new hub would indeed support the strong manufacturing base of the state, which comprises almost 20% of the total manufacturing output in India.

It is well to be noted that the 300,000 sq ft facility is going to be completely automated and will have in it advanced sorting systems, high-speed screening technology, and dimensional scanning equipment.
and also dedicated aircraft parking bays. The hub will be able to process inbound as well as outbound shipments simultaneously, thereby enhancing speed and dependability. This is going to be especially beneficial for sectors like electronics, engineering goods, and pharmaceuticals, as well as perishables.

The fact is that this development is going to support trade flows throughout Southeast Asia, West Asia, and Europe, and along with it, the United States, thereby embedding global network connectivity directly within the primary trade corridor of India. The facility is going to be equipped with certain advanced automated sorting systems, dimensional scanning, and high-speed screening technology, in addition to dedicated aircraft parking bays. It will help with simultaneous processing of inbound along with outbound shipments and also elevate the routing flexibility and predictability of transit time more so for high-value as well as time-sensitive sectors like electronics, engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, and also perishables. The enhanced dependability is also likely to strengthen the export-import capabilities when it comes to micro, small as well as medium enterprises while at the same time contributing toward lower logistics costs as well as turnaround times which are much faster.

It is worth noting that NMIA’s cargo operations are all set to start with a per-year handling capacity of almost 0.5 million metric tonnes, scaling up in phases to around 3.25 million metric tonnes when full development has taken shape. The location of the airport near Jawaharlal Nehru Port and also other major industrial corridors is enough to support the multimodal trade connectivity throughout Western India.

Notably, the Navi Mumbai hub builds on the recent expansion in India that FedEx has gone through. In December 2025, the company went on to launch a 60,000 sq ft integrated air hub located at the AISATS Logistics Park at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport. That facility went ahead and consolidated international import as well as export handling and at the same time also introduced automated processing systems and mechanized conveyors along with a high-speed dimensioning machine that comes with a throughput capacity of almost 4,000 packages per hour.

Apparently, in December 2023, FedEx Express also had established its first Advanced Capability Community globally in India. With an investment of $100 million, this further underscored the growing importance of the country when it comes to the company’s global network.

Because of this latest development in Navi Mumbai, FedEx is in a way going ahead and expanding its physical presence in India, and that too at a time when dependable and efficient logistics infrastructure has gone on to become central to global trade competitiveness.

In addition to FedEx, Aerologic, which is a JV between DHL as well as Lufthansa Cargo, Atlas Air, and Teleport, is also going to begin freighter services from NMIA.
