We are all pressed for time today. To top it all is the traffic congestion which is on the rise even in the smart cities across the world. This shouldn’t come as a surprise since there is a population explosion with the rise in automobiles, especially in urban centers. The existing infrastructure is aging and over-dependence on inefficient and uncoordinated traffic systems has made the life of a daily commuter chaotic.

There are always physical and financial restrictions when it comes to building additional roads. Besides one really cannot forecast the amount of time the road construction might take. Hence, it always makes sense to improve existing traffic conditions by adopting new strategies and technologies that help in a trouble-free experience.

Advanced Traffic Management System – ATMS

To take care of the ever-increasing and complex traffic situation, traffic authorities have shown a lot of inclination to adopting adaptive traffic control and traffic analytics which can significantly decrease traffic congestion and improve safety. When you look at the larger picture, you will realize that these systems can help accommodate additional vehicle populations. Some cities have started to adopt decentralized systems in various intersections that use a combination of video detection and radar which help in detecting traffic and also adjust signals in real-time using AI-driven software.

Features offered by Advanced Road Traffic Management System

  • Smooth and Seamless traffic flow
  • Increase in the traffic system efficiency
  • Reduced journey time
  • Enhanced commuting experience

Data helps in forecasting

The most significant contribution of this advanced traffic management system is that there is a continuous flow of data that takes place resulting in making the existing system more robust and also authorities can make informed decisions for challenges that might occur in the future.

Dynamic Message Sign

A variable message sign on the electronic board can help commuters get information about special events. The messages may be pertaining to congestions, accidents, etc. so that the traffic does not pile-up.

Additional services under the gamut of ATMS

Layers of additional services can be added under the umbrella of the advanced traffic management system. This includes public transport prioritization and also communications with connected vehicles.

Smart Parking solutions

Parking systems have indeed become pretty intact under ATMS. There is a dearth of space to park vehicles which often results in blockage of roads. What these smart parking systems do is guide vehicles towards the allocated parking spot through a vehicle guidance system. The users are also notified of the availability of parking space at different points in the city via various systems that come under the smart parking portfolio. Moreover, a person gets to book his parking space online too which gives a push to a hassle-free experience.

Multimodal Mobility Strategy

In addition to adopting such upgraded traffic systems, cities across the globe must also focus on a multimodal mobility strategy since technology also has its limitations. Prioritizing cycling, walking, etc. can help cities accommodate additional vehicle populations and also put less stress on the systems driven by IoT and AI.
