Jordan is currently executing plans under the Economic Modernization Vision to transform the nation into a regional transport and logistics hub. Nidal Al-Qatamin, Jordan’s Minister of Transport, highlighted that the government is focused on expanding the transport and logistics industry to drive economy growth, increase infrastructure development, and stimulate investment, speaking at the event “Jordan as a Regional Logistics Hub: Transport Policies as a Driver of Growth and Competitiveness”. The global trend toward integrated rail, maritime, and land networks presents a significant opportunity for Jordan to serve as a vital connection point.
The geographic position of Jordan allows for strategic connectivity between the Arab Gulf, the Levant, Turkey, and Europe. Furthermore, there is potential for integration with the Mediterranean via Egyptian territory. Al-Qatamin emphasized that this location provides the country with strong competitive potential within the global logistics market. By establishing these links, the government aims to enhance the efficiency of trade routes across multiple continents.
The government has initiated key infrastructure projects, most notably the Aqaba Port Railway Project. This initiative, which focuses on the transportation of phosphate and potash, involves investments exceeding $2.3 billion. The agreement is characterized by a clear partnership structure regarding responsibilities and decision-making between the parties involved.
Efforts are currently ongoing to assess the feasibility of further railway connectivity. The government is conducting studies to link the national network with Saudi Arabia and Syria, with the long-term goal of reaching Turkey and Europe. Al-Qatamin noted that as Saudi Arabia continues to build its own network and Syria works toward the rehabilitation of existing lines, the vision of a fully integrated regional transport and logistics hub moves closer to realization. These initiatives represent a concerted effort to utilize transport networks as a primary driver of national and regional competitiveness.
