Saudi Arabia Launches Rail Freight Corridor Linking Jordan

Saudi Arabia has introduced a new international rail freight corridor designed to strengthen trade links and streamline logistics between its Eastern Province ports and the Al-Haditha border crossing. The initiative, announced by Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR), connects key maritime hubs including King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, Al-Jubail Commercial Port and King Fahd Industrial Port in Jubail with Jordan and other northern neighboring countries. The newly launched rail freight corridor spans more than 1,700 km and is capable of handling trains transporting over 400 containers each, significantly enhancing freight capacity and regional connectivity.

The rollout comes against a backdrop of ongoing disruption to regional trade routes linked to the US-Israel conflict with Iran, which has impacted shipping flows and contributed to rising energy prices across key Gulf corridors. By establishing this rail freight corridor, Saudi Arabia aims to provide an alternative logistics solution that can mitigate such disruptions while improving supply chain efficiency. In a post on X, Transport Minister Saleh Al-Jasser described the development as a “practical model for integrating modes of transportation,” highlighting the strategic importance of multimodal connectivity.

Al-Jasser further noted that SAR “supports the diversification of trade routes and boosting the flow of goods movement,” while also reducing dependence on long-distance trucking. He emphasized that the initiative contributes to improving the efficiency of logistics asset utilization and supply chain operations, while advancing modern transportation solutions within the Kingdom’s logistics services framework. The rail freight corridor is aligned with Saudi Arabia’s National Transport and Logistics Strategy as well as its Vision 2030 objectives, both of which prioritize integration across transport networks and the expansion of logistics capabilities.

In a separate statement shared via its official X account, SAR said the corridor has the potential to connect domestic markets more effectively with countries to the east and north, adding that it “reinforces connectivity between Saudi Arabia’s seaports and northern and eastern land crossings.” The company also indicated that the service could cut shipping times by half compared to other land-based transport methods. The corridor forms part of the broader Logistics Corridors Initiative, which seeks to redirect freight flows from Eastern Region ports toward Red Sea gateways such as Jeddah Islamic Port, further enhancing the Kingdom’s role as a regional logistics hub through the development of this rail freight corridor.
