Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has officially sanctioned a forward-looking plan designed to significantly enhance the Tashkent Metro’s operational efficiency, passenger service quality, and overall infrastructure utilization. This strategic initiative addresses the escalating demands of a growing capital city, aiming to transform the metro into a cornerstone of Uzbekistan’s public transport network.

The current urban expansion and increasing population within Tashkent necessitate a substantial upgrade to the existing metro system. The approved vision for the Tashkent metro expansion sets ambitious targets, including a daily passenger traffic surge to 1.8 million individuals by the year 2030. To accommodate this projected growth, the network is slated for expansion to encompass 79 stations, with a total track length reaching 103 kilometers. Furthermore, a key objective involves reducing train intervals to a more efficient 1.5 to 3 minutes.

As part of the Tashkent metro expansion efforts, the period between 2026 and 2028 will see critical upgrades to the technical infrastructure and civil defense facilities. A paramount focus is placed on passenger safety, with a pilot project proposing the installation of glass platform screen doors at the “Shakhristan” station. This measure, aligned with international best practices, is anticipated to reduce accidents by an impressive 80-90% and also offers new avenues for advertising revenue.

The development of new metro lines remains a central priority. Preparatory work is currently underway for the feasibility and design documentation of the “Mingurik – Chilanzar market” route. The potential for a phased development of the “Mingurik – South Station” line, with a subsequent extension to the Chilanzar market, is also under active consideration as part of the broader Uzbekistan public transport strategy.

The renewal of rolling stock and the construction of new electric depots are also integral to the Tashkent metro expansion initiative. Between 2027 and 2030, decisions are scheduled regarding the procurement of new trains and the allocation of land for essential supporting infrastructure. A comprehensive development strategy for the Tashkent Metro, spanning from 2027 to 2035, was presented, envisioning a doubling of the network’s size, a 2.5-fold increase in passenger traffic, and the establishment of an environmentally sustainable and energy-efficient transport system that prioritizes enhanced comfort and safety standards.

Discussions also encompassed reforms to the tariff policy, drawing inspiration from international models such as distance-based fares, subscription options, and discounted rates for specific passenger groups.

President Mirziyoyev underscored the critical role of the metro as a vital component of transport infrastructure in a major metropolis. He emphasized the necessity of cohesive advancements in service quality, safety protocols, financial viability, and management systems. Following the presentation, the proposed plans received full approval, and relevant government bodies have been directed to commence their implementation.
The post Uzbekistan Greenlights Plan for Tashkent Metro Expansion appeared first on Transport Advancement.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi met on 12th May 2026 with Rodolphe Saadé, chairman and chief executive of CMA CGM, for discussions focused on expanding the company’s operations and investments in Egypt. The talks, held on the sidelines of the Africa-France Summit in Nairobi, centered heavily on CMA CGM investment initiatives tied to Egypt’s maritime transport and logistics sectors, including the operation of the country’s first semi-automated container terminal at Ain Sokhna Port. The two-day summit, titled “Africa Forward: Africa–France Partnerships for Innovation and Growth,” took place on 11-12 May under the broader theme “Africa Forward.”

According to presidential spokesman Mohamed El-Shennawy, El-Sisi commended the cooperation between Egypt and CMA CGM, describing the company as one of the world’s leading container shipping and maritime transport operators and highlighting its participation in multiple projects involving maritime and dry ports in Egypt. The president specifically pointed to the establishment and operation of the Red Sea Container Terminal at Ain Sokhna Port, Egypt’s first semi-automated container terminal, while reiterating Cairo’s interest in further expanding CMA CGM investment activity, particularly within the Suez Canal Economic Zone. El-Sisi said the government is working to attract additional foreign investment through new incentives while leveraging major improvements in maritime transport infrastructure and logistics services.

Saadé welcomed the meeting and reaffirmed CMA CGM’s commitment to strengthening its footprint in Egypt, according to the presidency. He cited Egypt’s strategic geographic position and the ongoing development of the country’s maritime transport and logistics capabilities as important factors supporting future CMA CGM investment opportunities. Discussions between the two sides also covered the effect of continuing regional tensions on international shipping routes. During the talks, El-Sisi said stakeholders in global maritime shipping should cooperate to address bottlenecks and reduce disruptions affecting international trade flows and supply chains, especially in the energy and food sectors. The meeting additionally explored ways to enhance maritime connectivity and economic integration between Egypt and African countries.

The Red Sea Container Terminal (RSCT) at Ain Sokhna Port remains one of Egypt’s flagship logistics and maritime infrastructure projects and forms a central part of efforts to transform the SCZone into a global shipping and trade hub. The terminal is being developed and operated by a consortium led by CMA CGM under a long-term concession agreement with Egyptian authorities. Located on the Red Sea near the southern entrance of the Suez Canal, the facility has been designed with semi-automated systems intended to improve cargo-handling efficiency, shorten turnaround times and enhance operational safety through advanced digital logistics systems, automated yard operations and modern container-handling equipment aligned with international standards. The project supports Egypt’s broader strategy to modernize ports, road infrastructure, rail connectivity and logistics corridors associated with the SCZone. Authorities expect the terminal to strengthen Egypt’s position within global supply chains by increasing container-handling capacity on the Red Sea and supporting transshipment operations through the Suez Canal corridor. In recent years, CMA CGM investment activity in Egypt has expanded across container terminals, dry ports, shipping services and logistics operations as international competition intensifies over strategic maritime trade routes and regional supply-chain infrastructure.
The post Egypt Eyes to Expand CMA CGM Investment in Maritime Industry appeared first on Transport Advancement.

Kenya Railways has launched a Ksh65 billion transport infrastructure program intended to address growing mobility challenges across Nairobi and surrounding counties. In a notice issued on 12th May 2026, the corporation invited firms to submit expressions of interest for participation in the project under the Kenya Urban Mobility Improvement Project (KUMIP). The initiative, which centers on Nairobi railway expansion, will extend across Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado and Murang’a counties as authorities seek to improve intermodal and multimodal urban transport systems within the metropolitan region.

According to Kenya Railways, the project is being supported through financing from the World Bank, with a portion of the funds designated for consultancy services during the planning phase. “The government has applied for financing from the World Bank towards the Kenya Urban Mobility Improvement Project and intends to apply part of the proceeds for consulting services,” Kenya Railways announced. The corporation further stated: “Consulting services include the development of a sustainable urban mobility plan for the Nairobi metropolitan area, encompassing the county governments of Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado and Murang’a.”

Officials indicated that the Nairobi railway expansion initiative will place significant emphasis on integrating different forms of transportation, including commuter rail systems and public bus networks, to improve movement across the capital region.

Kenya Railways disclosed that consultancy work linked to the multi-billion-shilling development is scheduled to begin on 27th 2026 and continue for one year and three months. Under the proposal, the selected firms will oversee urban mobility planning, environmental and social impact assessments, and strategies aimed at establishing seamless public transport connectivity throughout the targeted counties. The corporation said consulting companies participating in the Nairobi railway expansion program must demonstrate extensive expertise in urban transport planning, metropolitan mobility systems and large-scale infrastructure studies. Authorities also confirmed that construction activities are expected to roll out in phases, while feasibility studies, land acquisition procedures and environmental assessments are already in progress.

The launch of the project comes as Nairobi continues to face rapid urban population growth, worsening traffic congestion and increasing demand for reliable public transport services. The government is pursuing long-term mobility solutions designed to improve transportation efficiency across the metropolitan area, with the Nairobi railway expansion initiative forming a central part of that strategy. By integrating multiple transport systems and improving regional connectivity, the project is expected to support smoother movement within Nairobi and neighboring counties while strengthening urban mobility infrastructure for the future.
The post Nairobi Railway Expansion Targets Urban Mobility Growth appeared first on Transport Advancement.

In a significant step towards enhancing urban mobility and bolstering economic ties, Kenya and France have inked a pivotal cooperation agreement valued at Ksh 12.5 billion (approximately £83 million). This accord is set to drive the Nairobi commuter rail expansion and rehabilitation, forming a central component of Kenya’s urban transport modernization program. The announcement was made on 10th May 2026 following a joint briefing at State House, where Kenya’s President William Ruto and French President Emmanuel Macron unveiled a suite of 11 economic growth agreements.

Ruto highlighted the deepening strategic partnership between Kenya and France. He stated, “Our two countries today signed right here 11 instruments aimed at deepening cooperation across strategic sectors of our economies. Among the key instruments signed today is the rehabilitation and modernisation of the Ksh 12.5 billion Nairobi commuter rail, which will serve as a central pillar of our urban transport modernisation program.”

This comprehensive Nairobi commuter rail expansion will extend the commuter railway’s reach, connecting the capital city to satellite towns including Siokimau, Mbakasi, Ruiru, and Kikuyu. Furthermore, the project will integrate the Riruta-Ngong line, currently under construction. The modernization efforts encompass upgrading over 165 kilometers of existing railway lines, procuring Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs), and the construction of new railway stations, underscoring the commitment to advancing urban transport infrastructure development.

Beyond the critical improvements to the Nairobi Commuter Rail, the broader cooperation framework includes French support for the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority. This initiative aims to enhance weather and climate forecasting capabilities, which will directly benefit farmers, optimize freight operations at the Port of Mombasa, and facilitate the introduction of new air routes between Kenya and France.

The signing of these agreements precedes the Africa Forward Summit 2026, scheduled to convene in Nairobi from 11th May 2026 to 12th May 2026. The summit is expected to bring together 50 heads of state to foster partnerships focused on innovation, green energy, digital technology, and economic growth, further cementing the importance of this Nairobi commuter rail expansion within a larger continental context of economic growth and infrastructure development.
The post Kenya, France Partner Up for Nairobi Commuter Rail Expansion appeared first on Transport Advancement.

Taiwan’s Maritime Port Bureau has unveiled a comprehensive shipping industry upgrade plan, set to unfold through 2029. This strategic initiative is designed to significantly bolster the maritime industry upgrade by focusing on greener operations and advanced digital systems.

The importance of the maritime sector to Taiwan’s economy cannot be overstated. Maritime Port Bureau Director General Yeh Hsieh-lung highlighted that over 95% of the nation’s import and export cargo relies on sea transport. Furthermore, Taiwan’s three principal container shipping entities collectively contribute approximately 10% of global key shipping capacity. While acknowledging that government investments in port infrastructure have enhanced maritime capabilities, Yeh pointed out that the industry faces persistent challenges stemming from global economic shifts and evolving international conditions. Additionally, the sector grapples with workforce shortages and the necessity for improved coordination across its various components.

The newly introduced framework encompasses four pivotal areas: green transformation, smart innovation, talent development, and the reinforcement of the maritime industry ecosystem. It details 17 distinct strategies and 48 specific measures aimed at enhancing both industry competitiveness and long-term resilience.

A key component of the maritime industry upgrade plan involves improving digital port management and the establishment of a robust data exchange platform. This initiative seeks to streamline and strengthen shipping and port operations through enhanced data utilization. In terms of workforce development, the bureau is committed to promoting training programs. These will specifically target younger workers, individuals transitioning into the industry from non-maritime backgrounds, and crews operating vessels powered by alternative fuels.

To foster innovation and collaboration, the plan advocates for the establishment of a dedicated maritime industry research center. This center is envisioned to serve as a nexus, connecting government, academic, and industry resources. It is expected to provide valuable support for management training, facilitate broader industry cooperation, and introduce cutting-edge international maritime expertise.

The push for a sustainable future is evident in the measures dedicated to supporting the industry’s green transition. The framework includes clear guidelines for carbon reduction and plans to offer support for alternative-energy vessels operating on domestic coastal shipping routes. This aligns with the global imperative to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Yeh emphasized that the development of this maritime sector upgrade plan involved a thorough review of international shipping policies and extensive consultations. Discussions were held with shipping companies, industry associations, relevant government agencies, and academic experts to ensure that the proposed measures are both practical and achievable. The total funding allocated for this ambitious plan is estimated to be NT$2.45 billion (approximately US$78 million). The successful implementation of this maritime industry upgrade plan is anticipated to pave the way for a more sustainable and technologically advanced future for Taiwan’s shipping industry.
The post Taiwan Eyes Maritime Industry Upgrade through Strategic Plan appeared first on Transport Advancement.

Vietnam and France are moving forward with enhanced bilateral cooperation in the railway sector and urban mobility infrastructure as Vietnam accelerates its ambitious plans for metro systems and a landmark North-South high-speed railway project. This development marks an important phase in reshaping Vietnam’s transport infrastructure through France Vietnam railway cooperation initiatives.

The collaborative efforts were showcased at the inaugural France-Vietnam Forum on Railways and Urban Mobility, organized by Business France on 8th May 2026 in Hanoi under the France–Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework. The forum assembled Vietnamese government officials, transport sector authorities, investment representatives, and leading French companies with specialized expertise in rail infrastructure, signalling systems, rolling stock, operations, and project financing.

The gathering included prominent French firms specializing in rail technology and infrastructure development. Represented companies brought comprehensive capabilities spanning multiple aspects of railway project implementation, from initial design and planning through operational deployment and ongoing maintenance support.

According to Vietnam Railway Authority Deputy General Director Dương Hồng Anh, Vietnam is pursuing substantial expansion of its transport network. The country is simultaneously developing urban metro projects across major cities while preparing implementation of a planned high-speed railway connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. These ambitious infrastructure undertakings will demand considerable financial investment, technological expertise, established technical standards, professional workforce development, and coordinated international partnerships.

Anh highlighted that French companies’ involvement in Vietnam’s railway market reflects substantial interest in long-term cooperation opportunities within the country’s transport sector. He emphasized that France Vietnam railway cooperation extends beyond simple equipment supply relationships. The partnership encompasses comprehensive technology transfer, collaborative planning processes, professional training programs, and sustained support enabling Vietnam to progressively develop independent railway operation capabilities and expand integration within supply chain networks.

French Ambassador to Vietnam Olivier Brochet underscored that railway transport has emerged as a priority domain within bilateral cooperation frameworks. He referenced the reaffirmation of this commitment during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Vietnam in May of the previous year, when both nations formalized agreements emphasizing enhanced cooperation in railway project management training and broader transport sector development.

“Placing rail transport at the heart of our bilateral cooperation is a natural choice, given the longstanding ties between France and Việt Nam in this field, the ongoing joint projects, notably Hà Nội Metro Line 3, and the recognised French expertise in both long-distance rail and urban transport systems,” Brochet stated.

France Vietnam railway cooperation benefits from the country’s extensive operational experience managing a 2,700-kilometer high-speed rail network and developing the Grand Paris Express initiative, which represents Europe’s largest metro construction undertaking. The Grand Paris Express features more than 200 kilometers of newly constructed automated transit lines, demonstrating advanced technical capabilities applicable to Vietnamese projects.

During a meeting with the French business delegation on 7th May 2026, Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyễn Tường Văn affirmed that railway development occupies a central position within Vietnam’s national infrastructure strategy. The country’s railway development plan spanning 2021–2030 prioritizes the North–South high-speed railway project, urban railway systems in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and critical regional connections including the Hanoi–Lao Cai–Hai Phong corridor.

Vietnam seeks to learn from countries demonstrating advanced railway industry capabilities, particularly France, as it proceeds with substantial rail sector investments. These large-scale undertakings require major financial resources, specialized policy frameworks, established technical standards, professional workforce training programs, and comprehensive technology transfer mechanisms.

The North-South high-speed railway initiative garnered significant attention among French participants. This 1,540-kilometer project connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, with trains capable of operating at speeds reaching 350 kilometers per hour, would fulfill a strategic function within Vietnam’s transport infrastructure development. SNCF International’s leadership expressed confidence that the project would emerge as a substantial socio-economic growth catalyst extending across multiple decades.

The initiative offers potential benefits including strengthened regional connectivity, reduced development disparities across different areas, and provision of transportation options that are environmentally sustainable and safer compared to alternative transport methods. These advantages gain particular significance amid escalating climate-related concerns affecting transportation planning globally.

French railway sector participants confirmed readiness to contribute technical expertise and support Vietnam’s implementation of its comprehensive railway modernization strategy and urban mobility advancement plans.
The post France-Vietnam Forum to Boost Railway Cooperation Efforts appeared first on Transport Advancement.

The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) is significantly enhancing its collaboration with Germany to foster the development of modern, sustainable, and integrated transport infrastructure across the African continent. This deepened partnership emerged from a recent mission to Germany, where an AfDB delegation engaged in crucial discussions with key German government bodies and transport sector organizations.

A central theme of the engagement was the advancement of railway infrastructure, urban mobility, and digital connectivity. The AfDB delegation, led by Mike Salawou, held productive meetings with DB Engineering & Consulting (DB E&C), the engineering and consulting arm of Germany’s national railway operator, Deutsche Bahn. These discussions specifically explored how technical training, skills enhancement, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education can bolster African nations in their efforts to modernize and expand their railway networks as well as look for more sustainable transport solutions.

During the visit, the delegation experienced firsthand the comprehensive training capabilities at the DB Railway Academy in Potsdam. This institution is recognized globally for its extensive railway training programs, having delivered over 2,500 training courses and educated approximately 250,000 individuals annually since its inception in 1995.

A landmark achievement of these discussions was the signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI) between the African Development Bank Group and DB E&C. This pivotal agreement lays the groundwork for a collaborative feasibility study to establish an African Rail Competence Centre. This proposed center is envisioned as a continental hub for railway knowledge, innovation, research, and technical education, designed to accelerate the long-term modernization and development of rail infrastructure throughout Africa. Both organizations will jointly assess various institutional models, including decentralized, cooperative, and centralized structures, to identify the most effective framework to meet the continent’s evolving railway sector needs.

Jordan’s Cabinet of ministers during a session led by Prime Minister Jafar Hassan on 6th May 2026, has approved the 2026 amanedment to the Railway Services Licensing Bylaw. This legislative update aims to modernize the regulatory framework governing the rail sector while enhancing operational efficiency in alignment with regional and international standards. The Rail Licensing Bylaw seeks to regulate the contractual relationship between the regulatory authority and license holders. By refining the licensing process, the government intends to balance investment incentives with strengthened oversight, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the sector and improved operational readiness.

According to a statement from the Prime Ministry, the approved measures in the Rail Licensing Bylaw were consistent with both regional and global standards, while also advancing the gradual development of the national railway network and reinforcing its importance within the Jordan’s transportation infrastructure.

In conjunction with rail developments, the Cabinet has endorsed regulatory measures focused on the land transport sector. These initiatives are specifically designed to accelerate the modernization of the national truck fleet. Under these measures, Jordan has endorsed reducing the maximum permitted age for imported tractor-trailer units to five years. This will make it easier to mandate the removal of trucks older than 20 years from service, either through scrapping or re-export. The Cabinet also emphasized providing significant financial incentives, including full exemptions from general sales tax and waivers on registration and licensing fees.

The Jordanian government aims to modernize more than 8,300 vehicles over a two-year period. This initiative is expected to improve transportation efficiency by reducing operational and maintenance costs and minimizing vehicle breakdowns. Furthermore, these measures are intended to stimulate investment in the logistics and land transport industries, support digitization efforts, and gradually phase out outdated equipment. The updated regulatory framework under the Rail Licensing Bylaw also incorporates enhanced monitoring tools to bolster safety, service quality, and data management, ultimately strengthening the role of rail and road transport within the national infrastructure.
The post Jordan Approves New Rail Licensing Bylaw and Trucking Reform appeared first on Transport Advancement.

Egypt’s East of Nile Monorail, a pioneering project for the African continent, has commenced commercial operations on its initial section. This significant development, a collaborative effort involving Alstom, Orascom Construction, and Arab Contractors, is set to redefine urban mobility within the sprawling Cairo metropolitan area. The East of Nile line, spanning 56 kilometers and featuring 22 stations, is now open for passengers, with 16 stations already serving the public. This new infrastructure directly links the eastern districts of Cairo to the burgeoning New Administrative Capital, a major urban undertaking situated to the east of the existing city. Furthermore, the East of Nile Monorail is also the first African monorail, ushering in modernization in urban transport throughout Cairo.

The Alstom Innovia monorail system introduced on this line offers a vital alternative to road transport for residents of a megacity grappling with considerable traffic congestion and rapid urban expansion. Cairo’s metropolitan area, home to nearly 25 million people, is one of Africa’s most dynamic and expansive urban centers. The introduction of the first African monorail is strategically designed to accommodate substantial passenger volumes and reduce reliance on vehicular traffic.

This crucial infrastructure aims to enhance connectivity between residential areas, business hubs, and administrative zones. According to mobility assessments, the monorail dramatically cuts travel times. For instance, the journey between El Moshir Tantawi station and Justice City station, which previously took approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes by road, can now be completed in about 40 minutes. At its full operational capacity, the Innovia monorail system is projected to transport up to 45,000 passengers per hour in each direction, significantly alleviating urban congestion and responding to Cairo’s continuous growth.

A key feature of the East of Nile line’s advanced infrastructure is its adoption of CBTC GoA4 signaling. This technology enables fully automated operation, meaning the trains run without an on-board driver, ensuring a high degree of safety, reliability, and operational efficiency.

The Innovia monorail vehicles themselves were manufactured at Alstom’s facility in Derby, UK. Crucially, the testing and commissioning phases involved the expertise of local engineers, a collaborative approach that Alstom emphasizes as vital for sustained operational resilience. With the roll-out of the first African monorail, Cairo is set to define sustainable and advanced urban mobility throughout the continent.
The post Egypt Commences the First African Monorail Project in Cairo appeared first on Transport Advancement.
