The meeting, held at the Ministry’s headquarters, focused on identifying new opportunities to strengthen bilateral ties in civil aviation and support the continued development and competitiveness of the air transport sector.</p>
<p>The discussions formed part of Egypt’s broader efforts to expand strategic partnerships with international allies while advancing cooperation with the United Kingdom in areas of shared interest. A key focus of the talks was aviation sector cooperation, particularly through the expansion of investment opportunities, technical and technological partnerships, improved air connectivity, and initiatives related to training and simulation. Both sides also reviewed prospects for qualifying human resources through collaboration with specialized British companies operating in the sector.</p>
<p>Dr. Hefni highlighted the steady progress of Egyptian-British relations across multiple fields, noting that this momentum continues to be supported by the leadership of both countries. He emphasized that the Ministry of Civil Aviation seeks to widen its engagement with leading British institutions and companies to strengthen technical and operational capabilities and adopt advanced technologies. <p>For his part, Ambassador Richardson expressed the UK’s pride in its distinguished relationship and ongoing partnership with Egypt. He reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to continue cooperation in civil aviation, which supports travel and economic exchanges between the two countries. The ambassador also voiced optimism regarding Egypt’s participation in the upcoming Farnborough International Airshow 2026 scheduled for July.</p>
<p>Richardson further confirmed British support for participation in the International Air and Space Exhibition that will be held in New Alamein City in September 2026. These include an on-street running system that will oversee tram-train movements through Cardiff city centre and a line-of-sight signalling system on the Cardiff Bay Mainline. </span><span style="font-weight: 400">The latest contract further strengthens Siemens Mobility’s presence in the region. The company previously delivered signalling works as part of the Core Valley Lines Transformation programme, where lineside signalling infrastructure was renewed across South East Wales. That programme enabled train frequency to increase from two trains per hour to four trains per hour. In the future, Cardiff Crossrail is expected to connect with the existing Core Valley Lines network, broadening the reach of the South Wales Metro.</span><span style="font-weight: 400"><br />

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Great Britain has made significant strides in rail technology by being the first nation to test a prototype quantum navigation system on a mainline train. The Railway Quantum Inertial Navigation System (RQINS) was utilized on a Great Northern service traveling from London to Welwyn Garden City on 3rd March 2026. This trial, orchestrated by Great British Railways (GBR), represents an important milestone as the UK investigates next-generation positioning systems that can function independently of conventional satellite-based tools. This initial demonstration underscores the increasing importance of quantum navigation in contemporary rail systems.</p>
<p>The quantum navigation method is based on ultra-sensitive quantum sensors that can pinpoint a train’s precise location without relying on external signals. In contrast to GPS-based systems that rely on satellite signals, this technology tracks movement by sensing tiny variations in motion and rotation. Network Rail has indicated that the system remains precise even in difficult settings such as tunnels or heavily built-up areas, where satellite signals can be unreliable. By limiting dependence on trackside infrastructure, which can be expensive to develop and upkeep, the quantum navigation system also mitigates risks associated with environmental factors or equipment failures.</p>
<p>The system was implemented on a Great Northern train run by Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), enabling engineers to collect actual performance data across an active national rail network. This trial expands on prior research conducted by the UK’s Ministry of Defense and earlier evaluations on Transport for London systems. The project is being led by a specialized consortium headed by MoniRail, which includes contributions from Imperial College London, the University of Sussex, the National Physical Laboratory, PA Consulting, and QinetiQ. This initiative is supported by Innovate UK and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, with GBR&#8217;s innovation division, GBRX, managing efforts to hasten the implementation of this quantum navigation technology. Once completed, quantum systems could provide a more affordable, dependable, and robust solution. This project is part of broader efforts to upgrade infrastructure and rolling stock under Great British Railways.</p>
<p>Toufic Machnouk, managing director of GBRX, highlighted the significance of real-world testing, stating that it is crucial to incorporate new technologies into intricate operational environments to transform innovation into effective solutions. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">British Steel will</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> give the </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">rails to ERG International Group, which is</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> building </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">the</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> high-speed </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">project</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> for the Turkish </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">government. Once</span> <span style="font-weight: 400;">the line</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is finished, </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">the Turkish State</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Railways will run it. The material </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">will</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> be used to build </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">a</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> 599-kilometer </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">line between Ankara and İzmir.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> This </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">line</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is projected to greatly reduce </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">carbon emissions by</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> shortening the </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">time</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> it takes to travel </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">between the Turkish capital and</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> the </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">port</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> city. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> size of </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">the </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">high-speed rail contract </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">has led to </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">the</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> establishment </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">of 23 new</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> jobs </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">and the</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> initiation </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">of 24-7 rail</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> production activities </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">at Scunthorpe for the first time in</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> more than ten years. The Ankara–İzmir high-speed rail line is meant to change transportation in Türkiye by lowering train travel time by more than 10 hours and giving passengers and freight operators a faster, more efficient, and less polluting option.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Craig Harvey, British Steel&#8217;s Commercial Director for Rail stated, “We have a distinguished record of supplying into high-speed rail projects across the world and have previously delivered rail into Türkiye through ERG for earlier phases of the Ankara to Izmir line.&#8221;</span></p>
<p>He also said, “This contract has been the catalyst to us starting 24-7 rail manufacturing operations in Scunthorpe. We are also optimistic we can supply other steel products into this project and are working with ERG to support its future needs.”</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In one of the major industry updates, British Steel wins £35M contract to supply rail products for the high-speed rail network of Türkiye, confirmed a Downing Street statement.</p>
<p>As British Steel wins £35M contract, this new deal that goes on to follow a similarly sized contract, which was announced in 2024 for the Mersin–Adana–Osmaniye–Gaziantep project located in southern Türkiye, is part of a multi-million-pound package in terms of export deals that were unveiled by the prime minister at the G20 summit in Johannesburg over the weekend. Officials say that broader initiative is intended in order to open overseas markets when it comes to the UK companies and at the same time also promote trade links along with the Indo-Pacific as well as the African countries.</p>

Under the zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate, manufacturers must ensure that at least 28% of their UK sales this year are zero emission, primarily pure electric models. The requirement will rise gradually until it reaches 80% in 2030, the same year the sale of new petrol- or diesel-only cars is set to be prohibited. According to the government, maintaining progress against these targets will require expanding infrastructure and improving accessibility for drivers across local communities.</p>
<p>As part of its latest commitments, the government said the proposed funding would help local authorities develop more charging options on residential streets and other public areas. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Siemens Mobility has inaugurated its £6 million Multi-Functional Centre. The new facility strengthens the company’s ability to carry out key upgrades and modification work on passenger trains and brings new employment opportunities to the region. With this development, Siemens Mobility further underscores its wider push toward economic growth, innovation within the rail sector and improved passenger experiences.</p>
<p>During the opening ceremony, Lucy Rigby KC MP for Northampton North said:<span style="font-weight: 400;">“It was a privilege to officially open Siemens Mobility’s state-of-the-art Multi-Functional Centre and meet the highly skilled team working to enhance passenger journeys. It’s fantastic to see how Siemens Mobility’s local investment is fostering economic growth, creating new jobs and developing skills right here in Northampton.”</span></p>
<p>The site will focus on expanding Siemens Mobility’s capability to refurbish and upgrade the UK passenger train fleet, taking on interior improvements such as redesigned seating, enhanced toilets, new luggage stacks and updated charging ports. Its first assignment will involve work on East Midland Railway’s Class 360s, a refurbishment effort intended to elevate comfort levels and lift the overall passenger journey.</p>
<p>The investment also introduces a mobile team that can travel across the country to carry out technical work on fleets. This unit has already delivered a first-in-class installation on a third-party fleet, equipping trains with Siemens Mobility’s Variable Rate Sanding technology to support braking performance in slippery conditions. The next mobile programme will be the upgrade of train data recorders (OTDR), a step aimed at bringing mobile connectivity to third party fleets and helping to enhance reliability and availability.</p>
<p>In addition to the operational elements, Siemens Mobility reports that construction of the Multi-Functional Centre has produced a 17% net gain in biodiversity, aligning with its DEGREE sustainability framework. The new facility adds to Siemens Mobility’s broader UK investment, which totals up to £340 million in recent years. This includes up to £240m at its Rail Village in Goole, Yorkshire, where work on the next generation of Piccadilly line trains for Transport for London is underway, as well as the planned assembly of Britain’s battery bi-mode trains. A further £100 million commitment has been directed to Chippenham, Wiltshire, where the company’s Rail Technology Centre is being developed. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>ScotRail has opened a tender for a new suburban train fleet aimed at improving comfort, reliability, and accessibility, while also supporting cleaner, more sustainable travel across Scotland’s busiest routes. The announcement marks a pivotal stage in the operator’s long-term fleet renewal programme, as nearly two-thirds of ScotRail’s existing trains are expected to be replaced over the next 15 years. The new suburban train fleet is projected to begin service in the early 2030s.</p>
<p>The trains will serve routes including East Kilbride, Fife, the Borders, and Glasgow’s inner suburban lines, such as the Argyle Line and South Electrics routes, including the Shotts line. ScotRail hopes the new trains will help more people choose rail over cars, in line with the Scottish Government’s push to cut emissions and back greener ways to travel. The suburban train fleet will feature upgrades such as better air-conditioning, smoother and quieter rides, easier level boarding, and space for active travel.</p>
<p>The Scottish Government has granted full approval for the procurement process, which will be coordinated with Network Rail’s ongoing electrification projects on key lines. David Ross, ScotRail’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “This is exciting news for our passengers who will benefit from these new trains in the years to come. This is an essential step in making rail the easier, more attractive choice compared with travelling by car. We look forward to further discussions with potential suppliers as we continue to deliver a safe, reliable, and green railway.”</p>
<p>Fiona Hyslop MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Transport, added: “Resilient ScotRail services are core to our objectives of a reliable railway that enables access to employment, education, and leisure opportunities. This latest milestone in renewing older fleets demonstrates our commitment to making our publicly owned and operated rail services a success. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Rolls-Royce has taken the lead in a new initiative aimed at advancing the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to make it more efficient in cutting non-CO2 emissions, particularly those linked to contrail formation.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Quantifying Reduction in Thermal Contrails by Optimising SAF (QRITOS) project, Co-funded through the Non-CO2 Programme under the ATI Programme brings together Rolls-Royce, British Airways, Imperial College London, and Heathrow. The collaboration seeks to improve scientific understanding of how SAF can be applied more strategically to mitigate aviation’s broader environmental impact.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While the contribution of SAF to reducing total CO2 emissions across a fuel’s lifecycle is already established, studies tracking aircraft emissions in flight have revealed another potential benefit: SAF may reduce the number of ice crystals within contrails. These thin, high-altitude clouds, which form behind aircraft, are known to contribute to the overall climate effect of aviation.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Right now, the global supply of SAF is still small and mostly mixed with regular jet fuel in low proportions. But in the UK, its use is expected to rise after the national SAF mandate took effect earlier this year. The mandate outlines that SAF must make up 10% of UK aviation fuel by 2030, rising to 22% by 2040.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Because weather conditions vary constantly, contrails form only under specific atmospheric circumstances, meaning that a small proportion of flights are responsible for most of the potential climate impact. This presents an opportunity for more targeted deployment of SAF. The QRITOS project will put this idea to the test at Heathrow, one of the world’s busiest airports. It will use data from British Airways flight trials along with modelling and satellite tracking to see how targeted SAF use affects contrail formation.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">According to project partners, QRITOS project will demonstrate that prioritising certain flights for SAF use could maximise the environmental benefit of the limited fuel supply available today. The initiative also supports broader work under the Non-CO2 Programme, which addresses emissions beyond carbon dioxide as detailed in the ATI’s Non-CO2 Technologies Roadmap. The programme is delivered by the Aerospace Technology Institute, Department for Business and Trade (DBT), and Innovate UK, alongside the Department for Transport (DfT) and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Industry Minister Chris McDonald said: “This is government and business working together at its best, and I look forward to seeing how this Rolls-Royce project can help keep UK industry at the forefront of the race for sustainable aviation.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“We’re bolstering our support for the aerospace industry through our modern Industrial Strategy – giving business the confidence it needs to invest in UK advanced manufacturing and delivering on growth as part of our Plan for Change.”</span></p>
