The Vietnam Railways Corporation (VNR) and China’s Guangzhou Metro Group Co., Ltd. have formalized a significant strategic cooperation agreement. This pact, signed in Hanoi on 1st June 2026, aims to bolster expertise and operations across electrified railways, metro lines, and crucially, human resources training.

This initiative is a direct outcome of high-level discussions and strategic alignments between Vietnam and China, particularly following a state visit earlier this year. A joint statement issued after that visit underscored the commitment to deepening a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and advancing a shared future community of strategic significance. A key pillar identified within this framework is the acceleration of cross-border infrastructure connectivity, with a pronounced emphasis on railways and road transport. The shared vision includes expanding transport links toward Central Asia and Europe, fostering improved trade and logistics.

Dang Sy Manh, Chairman of the VNR Members’ Council, highlighted VNR’s dual focus: ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the existing national railway network while simultaneously preparing for new railway projects. These future endeavors include urban railways and high-speed rail lines, as designated by the Government. He noted the ambitious urban rail plans for major Vietnamese cities, with Hanoi projecting seven new metro lines totaling nearly 398 kilometers by 2035, aiming to fulfill 35-40% of public transport needs. Similarly, Ho Chi Minh City anticipates operating six metro lines, approximately 183 kilometers in length, within the same timeframe, accounting for 30-40% of its passenger transport demand. The Vietnam-China rail cooperation is expected to be vital in achieving these targets.

Currently, VNR and Guangzhou Metro are collaborating on a bid for the entrusted operation services of a light railway project on Phu Quoc Island. Exploratory discussions are also underway for other urban railway projects, including the Bau Bang – Cai Mep line in Ho Chi Minh City, alongside dedicated personnel training initiatives. Mr. Manh expressed keen interest in strengthening exchanges and cooperation with Guangzhou enterprises, specifically requesting Guangzhou Metro to share its technical expertise and operational experience in crucial areas such as intercity railway management, high-speed electrified standard-gauge railways (up to 200 km/h), transit-oriented development (TOD) strategies, and the implementation of smart railway systems. The Vietnam-China rail cooperation offers significant opportunities for knowledge transfer.

Lai Zhihong, Vice Mayor of the Guangzhou municipal People’s Government, responded positively to these proposals, suggesting the formation of a joint consortium to propel future projects forward. This collaborative effort is intended to contribute directly to Vietnam’s national objective of developing a 7,000-kilometer national railway network, in accordance with its approved master plan. This strategic partnership underscores the importance of Vietnam-China rail cooperation for future growth.
The post Vietnam Railways and Guangzhou Metro Forge Rail Cooperation appeared first on Transport Advancement.

Officials from Russia and China formally signed an agreement in Beijing on 20th May 2026 to advance a major cross-border railway link project during a ceremony attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The initiative centers on constructing a second railway line featuring Chinese standard gauge track at the border crossing between Zabaikalsk in Russia’s Far East and Manzhouli in China’s Inner Mongolia region. Russia’s Transportation Ministry had previously outlined the details of the plan earlier this year, highlighting the importance of the cross-border railway link in easing transportation pressures between the two countries.

According to the ministry in Moscow, the additional rail line is projected to raise annual freight capacity by 11 million tons by 2030. This means nearly 50 additional pairs of freight trains each day. The Zabaikalsk–Manzhouli route currently stands as the busiest rail checkpoint connecting Russia and China and remains a vital trade corridor for bilateral commerce. At present, cargo moving through the crossing must be shifted between Russia’s broader 1520-millimeter gauge wagons and China’s 1435-millimeter standard gauge system, a process that has contributed to long-standing logistical bottlenecks. The new cross-border railway link is expected to help address those constraints as freight volumes continue to rise.

Trade flows between the two countries have climbed sharply since 2022, increasing by more than 50% to exceed $200 billion annually after the Kremlin sent troops into Ukraine, prompting Western sanctions that strengthened Moscow’s dependence on China as an economic partner. Despite the rapid expansion in trade, railway infrastructure limitations have increasingly restricted cargo movement as volumes expanded. Russia has redirected a substantial portion of its commodity exports, including coal and aluminum, toward China over its rail network after the European Union imposed restrictions on imports from Russia and some international buyers avoided Russian materials. The growing importance of the cross-border railway link has therefore become central to supporting these redirected export flows.
The post Russia, China to Expand Cross-Border Railway Trade Links appeared first on Transport Advancement.

*ST Songfa went on to announce that its subsidiary Hengli Shipbuilding-Dalian Co., Ltd. has inked a contract when it comes to the construction of one 158,000 DWT crude oil carrier. The contract value amounts to between $80 million and $100 million, with the delivery scheduled for Q1 of 2029.

The announcement went on to disclose that the counterparty to the contract was quite a recognized European shipowner. As per the agreement signed between the shipowner and Hengli Shipbuilding, as well as keeping in mind the relevant provisions of the Regulations on the Temporary Suspension and Exemption of Information Disclosure by Listed Companies, the specific information pertaining to the shipowner was exempted from the disclosure.

The announcement confirmed that this 158,000 DWT crude oil carrier goes on to represent a mainstream global large-scale crude oil tanker design. Featuring high deadweight capacity, low fuel consumption, and outstanding environmental performance, it goes on to sync with the updated global design concepts when it comes to crude oil tankers and also meets the most recent environmental regulations.

Interestingly, this also marks the second tanker construction contract that was signed by Hengli Shipbuilding in December 2025. As reported in the past, on December 20, *ST Songfa had announced that Hengli Shipbuilding, its subsidiary, had inked and also finalized a contract for the construction of two 114,000 DWT crude oil/product tankers. The new vessels are being sold to a single-ship company under Monte Nero Holdings S.A. The overall contract value is almost $100-200 million, with a delivery that is scheduled for H1 of 2027.

It is worth noting that ever since the third quarter of 2025, Hengli Heavy Industries has gone ahead and secured a series of fresh orders in the new shipbuilding market, thereby covering many vessel types such as container ships, bulk carriers, and oil tankers. Notably, its order backlog now extends till 2029. At the same time, making utmost use of its strong industrial chain benefits, Hengli Heavy Industries has attained independent manufacturing capacities for core components like marine main engines. This sort of robust delivery assurance has gone on to become a major factor when it comes to the selection decisions of clients.
The post Construction of 158,000 DWT Crude Oil Carrier Deal Signed appeared first on Transport Advancement.

In a recent update, the Beijing Tongzhou Railway Station, which is a major node in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei rail network, went on to officially open to traffic on December 30, 2025. Located in the southeastern transport hub of the capital, this new facility is going to integrate high-speed, intercity as well as commuter rail services, as per reports.

It is worth noting that departing from the new station, travelers can go ahead and reach Baodi in Tianjin in only 26 minutes, with Beichen just 56 minutes away and Qinhuangdao in Hebei Province very much accessible in under 90 minutes through the intercity train. The new line indeed expands the cross-provincial travel alternatives and also brings cities in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region much closer, hence filling that critical gap in terms of regional connectivity and also boosting the coordinated development when it comes to the region, as per the statement.
The Beijing Tongzhou Station is crafted as a major hub when it comes to multi-network integration, having plans to link the metro lines, intercity as well as suburban railways, and also bus services, while at the same time, reserving for the future cruise along with airport check-in facilities, remarked one of the deputy chief engineers of the China Railway Design Co., Qin Baolai, reported China Media Group – CMG.

Interestingly, the opening of Beijing Tongzhou Station goes on to mark the launch of a new eight-station and two-airport transport hub layout when it comes to the Chinese capital. A 1- to 1.5-hour travel circle that connects major cities within the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region has already taken shape and is complemented by a one-hour commuter belt around Beijing, thereby infusing fresh momentum in the development of the area, says CMG.

Covering almost 216,000 square kilometers and also home to over 100 million people, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region goes on to get served by a rail network that is built around the four main corridors and also eight radial lines, which, by the way, is a layout that is well suited to its scale as well as mobility requirements, opines CMG.

From a market viewpoint, the station goes on to shorten the economic distance between the cities, advances the regional market integration, and also expands the market accessibility of the firm. Greater connectivity is most likely going to attract more external investment, infusing some fresh momentum within regional growth and also strengthening the region as a major economic engine.

As the development focus of Beijing shifts eastward, Tongzhou has popped up as a major hub when it comes to government bodies and businesses as well as talent, Yongzu added. The opening of the station sharply goes on to decrease the travel times, easing the cross-regional commuting constraints and also supporting much more efficient flows of people along with resources.
The post Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Regional Rail Connectivity Gets Better appeared first on Transport Advancement.

In a move aimed at easing trade tensions, the United States and China have agreed to put their new port fees on hold for one year. The step marks a brief thaw in ties between the world’s two biggest economies and offers relief to shipping and logistics companies that had been bracing for higher costs. According to China’s Ministry of Commerce, Washington will delay the enforcement of its planned port charges on Chinese-linked vessels until late 2026. In response, Beijing has confirmed that it will suspend its retaliatory “special port fees” on U.S.-affiliated ships for the same period.

The agreement came after high-level talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Busan, South Korea, their first face-to-face meeting since reciprocal port tariffs were reinstated on October 14, 2025. Many see the move as a calculated effort to steady trade relations and prevent another round of tensions after months of strain over shipping access and trade rules.

The port-fee dispute originated with Washington’s move under Section 301 of the U.S. Trade Act, which introduced new port fees on vessels with a “Chinese nexus.” The measure targeted ships that were built, owned, operated, or flagged in China. Beijing retaliated swiftly by imposing its own “special port service fees” of RMB 400 per net ton on U.S.-linked ships calling at Chinese ports. The Chinese Ministry of Transport had planned to gradually increase these charges over the coming years, triggering concerns among global shipping companies about the potential for a spiraling cost structure in trans-Pacific trade.

By putting the Reciprocal Port Tariffs measures on hold for a year, both governments have paused one of the more disruptive flashpoints in their recent trade dispute. The legal groundwork for the fees still exists, so they could return if talks falter. Even so, the suspension gives the global shipping and logistics industry some short-term clarity and relieves the immediate pressure of rising port costs that might have distorted freight rates and vessel schedules across the Pacific.

Industry observers have welcomed the move as a timely break for carriers already dealing with cost strains from other global disruptions. The suspension is expected to stabilize short-term operational planning, particularly for firms engaged in U.S.-China trade routes, where even minor cost adjustments can ripple through global supply chains.

The agreement is also seen as part of a broader push to rebuild trust after months of heated exchanges between Washington and Beijing. Both governments called the port-fee suspension a “confidence-building step,” reflecting an effort to ease tensions after a turbulent year of clashes over technology exports, maritime competition, and industrial support policies. According to reports, the Busan meeting also covered topics such as export controls, rare-earth supply chains, and strategic coordination in industrial policy, all seen as key pressure points in their ongoing economic rivalry.

Analysts say the suspension will benefit not only shipping lines operating between the U.S. and China but could also bring a measure of stability to global trade routes. European ports could also benefit if container traffic and transshipment volumes through major Asian hubs start moving more steadily again. A smoother flow of goods would likely ease congestion, keeping freight operations more predictable in the months ahead.

For the maritime industry, the one-year pause brings a rare sense of calm. It may be temporary, but in a market defined by uncertainty, even a short period of stability matters. The industry continues to grapple with volatility caused by Red Sea route disruptions, shifting trade alliances, and imbalanced shipping capacity. The temporary removal of port fee measures removes one significant stress factor from this complex equation, giving logistics operators and carriers a chance to recalibrate operations without the added burden of political risk pricing.

Officials in Washington and Beijing said the one-year suspension takes effect immediately, giving both sides some breathing room to continue talks on a longer-term deal. But industry executives warn the truce is still fragile. The legal basis for both sets of port fees remains in place, so either country could bring them back if negotiations stall.

For now, the deal represents a cautious but welcome pause in U.S.-China trade tensions. The deeper disputes remain unresolved, yet the move suggests a practical step toward cooperation and gives the shipping industry a break from mounting cost pressures. After a year of geopolitical turbulence and market swings, the sector can, at least for now, move forward with a bit more confidence.
The post US and China to Suspend Reciprocal Port Tariffs for One Year appeared first on Transport Advancement.

A Chinese-made flying car was demonstrated over one of Dubai’s beach resorts, attracting attention from industry observers.

Guangzhou-based Aridge conducted a manned flight of its Land Aircraft Carrier for a selected audience in the United Arab Emirates. The company aims to offer the electric aircraft as a transport option for high-net-worth individuals in the region.

The aircraft launches from a wheeled mothership and is capable of vertical takeoff and landing. Aridge said it has received 600 pre-orders, including from UAE-based Ali & Sons Group and Qatar’s Almana Group.

Priced below $270,000 in China, the flying car is controlled by a joystick and includes an automated flight mode. “It is designed to be accessible and able to be flown by ordinary people, everyone — you don’t need to be a professional pilot,” said Michael Chao Du, Aridge’s chief financial officer and vice president. No price has been announced for the UAE.

Aridge, a unit of XPENG Motors (formerly XPENG AEROHT) has become a part of UAE’s technology adoption and luxury transport. The company experienced a setback last month when one of its aircraft caught fire at a Chinese air show.

Advances in battery technology have supported the emergence of multiple flying taxi companies globally, although the industry’s commercial viability beyond affluent customers remains uncertain. Joby Aviation, a Santa Cruz-based manufacturer of electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, also plans to launch an air taxi service in Dubai.

The public demonstration of Land Aircraft Carrier at Palm Jumeirah followed Aridge’s receipt of a special flight permit in September from the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority. Additional approvals will be required for wider operations and sales.

Flying cars are “the future of mobility”, said Ali Al Blooshi, an official from Dubai’s civil aviation authority. “We expect them to become accessible and affordable soon as more companies enter the market.”

Aridge has begun mass production in China, with a facility capable of producing 10,000 units per year. The first consumer deliveries are expected in 2027.
The post Aridge Demonstrates Land Aircraft Carrier Technology in UAE appeared first on Transport Advancement.

Iran’s transport minister has confirmed that the country is moving closer to finalizing an agreement with China for the development of a high-speed railway linking the capital, Tehran, to Mashhad, Iran’s second-largest city.

Farzaneh Sadegh announced that the Chinese investor is expected to formalize the Tehran-Mashhad high-speed rail contract during President Masoud Pezeshkian’s upcoming visit to Beijing.

The government aims to cut the travel time on the 900-kilometer stretch between Tehran and Mashhad. It is one of the most busiest railway lines in West Asia, transporting tens of millions of passengers annually, most of whom are pilgrims.

Mashhad, with a population of 3.5 million, contains Imam Reza (AS) shrine, who is the eighth Imam of the Shia school of thought. Its location along the Sarakhs-Razi corridor reinforces its position as an east-west cargo transit hub, promoting the increasing flow of cargo through Iran to and from Central Asia.

In July, Iran’s railway authority confirmed plans to electrify almost 1,000 kilometers of track from Sarakhs to the Razi border crossing with Iraq. The initiative, supported by a Chinese company, also includes sections of double-tracking. According to Jabbar Ali Zakeri, the project is designed to expand rail freight capacity on the corridor to 15 million metric tons annually.

Iran’s broader plan to modernise its railroads with the high-speed railway comes at a timely moment with the effort to expand east-west transport links. These efforts are part of the nation’s bid to capture more revenues from transit cargoes, particularly in the framework of China’s One Belt, One Road initiative, which is redrawing transport infrastructure across Asia, Europe, and Africa.
The post China to Invest in Tehran-Mashhad High-Speed Rail in Iran appeared first on Transport Advancement.

China has transformed global perceptions of railway infrastructure with the unmatched scale and efficiency of its high-speed rail network. Over the past two decades, China high- speed rail has evolved into the largest and most advanced system in the world, redefining public transportation and setting new standards for innovation, connectivity, and sustainability.

A Rapid Expansion Unmatched in History

Since the first high-speed line between Beijing and Tianjin was launched in 2008, China’s rail network has grown exponentially. Today, it stretches over 45,000 kilometers, covering more ground than all other countries combined. This ambitious expansion has made high-speed rail a practical and preferred choice for millions of domestic travelers.

Driving Innovation Through Engineering Excellence

The success of China high-speed rail stems from cutting-edge technologies, including smart scheduling systems, maglev trains, and proprietary track design adapted to complex terrains. Chinese engineers have overcome logistical challenges like seismic zones and extreme weather conditions, setting new global benchmarks for railway construction.

Regional Integration and Economic Upliftment

High-speed rail is not just a transportation project—it’s a nation-building strategy. By connecting megacities with smaller inland towns, China has stimulated regional economies, encouraged tourism, and reduced rural-urban disparity. Cities like Zhengzhou, Wuhan, and Guiyang have become vibrant economic hubs thanks to improved rail connectivity.

Global Ambitions and Export Potential

As demand for modern infrastructure grows globally, China is actively exporting its expertise. From Indonesia’s Jakarta-Bandung project to proposals in Africa and Europe, China high-speed rail is becoming a symbol of innovation and efficiency beyond national borders. These international ventures also serve China’s broader Belt and Road Initiative, promoting infrastructure-led diplomacy.

Environmental Sustainability

High-speed rail supports China’s climate commitments by offering a low-carbon alternative to air and car travel. Powered increasingly by renewable electricity, these trains drastically reduce CO₂ emissions and support sustainable urban development.

Conclusion

The rise of China high-speed rail has reshaped both the domestic and global transportation landscape. With continued investment in smart mobility, green energy, and international partnerships, China is not just building railways—it’s building the future of transit. As other countries look to modernize their infrastructure, China’s model provides a clear and compelling roadmap for progress.
The post China High-Speed Rail Drives Global Transit Innovation appeared first on Transport Advancement.

Azerbaijan Railways (ADY) and China-based Xi’an Free Trade Port Construction and Operation Co. Ltd. agree to boost transit cooperation as ADY signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Xi’an Free Trade Port Construction and Operation Co. Ltd. during an official business visit to China. The agreement marks a new phase in Middle Corridor railway cooperation, which continues to gain traction as a vital transport link between Asia and Europe.

As part of the agreement, ADY will station a permanent representative at Xi’an Port and has officially launched a container terminal there. The facility is built to handle 20,000 TEUs annually, helping to improve cargo handling capacity along this critical route.

The MoU outlines wider areas of collaboration. The two parties will collaborate in the expansion of transit operations, digitalisation of infrastructure, and boosting cargo flow along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), commonly known as the Middle Corridor.

In meetings with Xi’an Mayor Ye Niuping and officials at the port, ADY Chairman Rovshan Rustamov emphasised the importance of the new agreement. He called it the result of sustained discussions between ADY and Xi’an Port leadership. According to Rustamov, assigning a full-time ADY representative and launching the terminal are essential steps that will boost the Middle Corridor railway cooperation and improve efficiency in cargo transit. The MoU also enables direct access to Xi’an Port’s systems, speeding up information flow and strengthening real-time coordination.

Rustamov also drew attention to the broader context of the alliance. He spoke of the strategic partnership signed during President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to China in April 2025 as a milestone in bilateral cooperation within the Belt and Road Initiative.

On the visit, Rustamov informed Chinese counterparts of the most recent integration of the Baku International Sea Port into Azerbaijan Railways (ADY). He noted that having port and rail operations integration will improve logistic service along the Asia–Europe corridor.

Xi’an Port authorities welcomed the establishment of a container terminal by ADY. They said the new container terminal would strengthen cooperation, increase efficiency, and encourage joint decision-making for future transport developments. The move also reflects growing confidence in the Middle Corridor as a reliable logistics route.

Trade volumes point to the rising importance of the corridor. Azerbaijani-China rail cargo grew 47% in 2024 to 612,000 tonnes. 287 block trains came in from China alone last year. In the first half of 2025, that number already tallies 199, and is expected to exceed 400 by the end of the year.

Both sides plan to work more closely together on several key projects. These include integrating more container trains onto the corridor, enhancing port, railway, and Caspian Sea crossing capacity, and opening up greater access to Europe and Türkiye through the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars (BTK) railway.

Another MoU signed with China Railways State Corporation gives special emphasis to the upgrade of the BTK route. The two signatories committed themselves to increasing volumes of Chinese manufactured goods flowing to European markets via Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Türkiye, further consolidating the Middle Corridor rail cooperation as a strong alternative to conventional routes.

Rail connections between Xi’an and Baku continue to improve. A container block train completed the journey from Xi’an to Baku in just 11 days in March 2024. November 2023 marked the first export train from Azerbaijan to Xi’an, carrying 62 containers. Today, Azerbaijani exporters have a direct and efficient link to the Chinese market, as two block trains leave Baku for Xi’an each month.
The post Azerbaijan, China Boosts Middle Corridor Railway Trade appeared first on Transport Advancement.

China and Kazakhstan have agreed on a strategic agreement to improve railway connectivity and increase freight volumes through the Middle Corridor, also termed the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR).

China State Railway Group and Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) signed a fresh Agreement on Comprehensive Strategic Cooperation superseding the former 2014 framework in the signing ceremony in Beijing. The fresh agreement shows approval of both countries’ shared interest in upgrading transport logistics and creating sustainable trade networks.

KTZ stated that the project is intended to further strengthen Kazakhstan as a logistic hub between East and West. It also highlights their shared goal of the development of the China-Kazakhstan Middle corridor, strengthening its competitive advantage as a China-Europe corridor for trade.

Rail commerce between China and Kazakhstan remains in the grip of a powerful momentum. From January to May 2025, volumes of freight weighed 14.2 million tonnes—up 11% year on year. Grain shipments rose especially forcefully, up 46% to 1.6 million tonnes. It reflects Kazakhstan’s growing importance both as a transit nation and a provider of strategic goods like agricultural products and raw materials.

One noteworthy infrastructure accomplishment of this cooperation is the new Zhetysu container terminal in Almaty. The container became operational on June 10. Built by Kazakhstan and China together, the terminal will ensure smooth handling of Chinese freight through both rail and road connections.

The terminal will serve as a primary node for consolidating cargo, making the China-Kazakhstan Middle Corridor a more effective trade corridor. The terminal is a milestone achievement in building multimodal infrastructure to support trans-Eurasian trade.

Kazakhstan’s continued focus on the modernisation of its transport network, combined with enhanced cooperation with China, is going to deliver long-term regional benefits. The deal is expected to further increase connectivity, facilitate robust supply chains, and make Eurasian routes more competitive.
The post Deal Boosts China-Kazakhstan Middle Corridor Trade Route appeared first on Transport Advancement.
