ABB E-mobility and Shell are taking their collaboration to the next level to bring flexible and quality charging to millions of electric vehicle drivers.

As a leader in EV charging infrastructure, ABB E-mobility has signed a new global framework agreement with Shell to supply ABB’s end-to-end portfolio of AC and DC charging stations. The portfolio ranges from the AC wallbox for home, work or retail installations to the Terra 360 which is ideal for refueling stations, urban charging stations, retail parking and fleet applications.

Through this collaboration, ABB E-mobility and Shell will help address two of the challenges to increasing EV adoption. Firstly, charging infrastructure availability, with Shell targeting the operation of over 500,000 charge points globally by 2025 and 2,500,000 by 2030, either at residential, commercial or Shell retail sites. Secondly, the speed of charging, with ABB’s portfolio of charging stations including its Terra 360 charger.

Frank Muehlon, CEO of ABB E-mobility commented: “In line with our mutual involvement in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, both ABB and Shell are innovating to drive progress in e-mobility. We have been working together on the roll-out of public charging infrastructure since 2019 and this latest agreement takes that collaboration to the next level.

“We are excited to support Shell in realizing its objective to create a global charging network. With access to the full breadth of our charging portfolio, we are ensuring that Shell can select the most appropriate solution for every use case, helping to get more people charging regardless of their location.”

ABB is a world leader in EV charging solutions and the partner of choice for the world’s biggest electric vehicle OEMs and nationwide EV charging network operators, having sold more than 680,000 electric vehicle chargers across more than 85 markets; over 30,000 DC fast chargers and 650,000 AC chargers, including those sold through Chargedot.

ABB is the title partner of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, an international racing series for fully electric single-seater racecars. Its technology supports the events at city-street tracks around the globe and the company will be the Official Charging Supplier from Season 9.

ABB is a leading global technology company that energizes the transformation of society and industry to achieve a more productive, sustainable future. By connecting software to its electrification, robotics, automation and motion portfolio, ABB pushes the boundaries of technology to drive performance to new levels. With a history of excellence stretching back more than 130 years, ABB’s success is driven by about 105,000 talented employees in over 100 countries.
The post ABB to support Shell’s global EV charging ambitions appeared first on Transport Advancement.

Eaton announced its Vehicle Group and eMobility businesses are continuing their expansion into Europe, a leading region in EV technology, with the establishment of a new office and research center in Karlsruhe, Germany.

This expansion will complement existing engineering and manufacturing sites in Montrottier, France, and Tczew, Poland. The new office in Karlsruhe will serve as a base for customer interaction and engineering service for Eaton’s Vehicle Group and eMobility customers in the region. The facility will include a new laboratory that enables rapid turnaround in testing Eaton’s latest eMobility products.

“The city of Karlsruhe is a central location in Europe near major automotive manufacturers and suppliers, allowing us to be closer to our customers and satisfy their needs in terms of research and development,” said Scott Adams, president, eMobility, Eaton. “The new facility is also close to several prestigious universities, which will allow us to attract talent for our research center.’’

This location will also host Vehicle Group employees from varying product lines and functions, ensuring an integrated approach and alignment with customers across the region.

Eaton is also expanding and upgrading its engineering and manufacturing capacity across its other sites in the region.

The Vehicle Group’s recent expansion of its Tczew facility includes investing more than $20 million (USD) to add an innovative laboratory and three new automated production lines to manufacture EV components for its eMobility customers.

Equipment for the new eMobility lines is currently being installed, with the start of production scheduled for the first quarter of 2023. The lines will initially produce traction inverters for a major European automaker that will save energy and help increase the range of EVs and contribute to extended battery life. Additional eMobility solutions will later be produced at the plant, including power distribution units.

In addition, Eaton’s eMobility location in Montrottier is undergoing expansion to support the demand for power electronics and power distribution products for EVs in the automotive sector. Due to its location, the Montrottier plant serves both European-based vehicle manufacturers and suppliers, as well as global customers.

Three new assembly lines will increase output at the facility up to four times that of current levels, and a new cleanroom will allow for testing in a sterile environment. Eaton also will be adding engineering, manufacturing, and support staff to sustain increased production.

“Eaton’s continued expansion in Europe is a crucial step to growing the traditional Vehicle and eMobility businesses and offering cutting-edge EV solutions to our global customers across the region,” said Marco Martini, president, Vehicle Group, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Eaton. “These upgrades will support Eaton’s efforts in delivering electric vehicle solutions to passenger car, commercial vehicle and off-highway OEMs globally.”
The post Eaton’s Vehicle Group and eMobility continue to expand footprint in Europe appeared first on Transport Advancement.

UWL, a top 10 American-owned NVOCC and leading provider of global 3PL services, has contracted with Swire Shipping, a multi-purpose liner service, to launch a new, exclusive express service, departing from Ho Chi Minh City and arriving at the Port of Seattle in 18 days. Providing speed and predictability, the bi-weekly service offers the fastest trip from Vietnam to the US. This revolutionary agreement is the first dedicated ocean service by an NVOCC in the trade.

“Customers have been asking for creative solutions during this extremely challenging market, and this first-of-its-kind service is part of our response. Congestion and rate spikes will come and go, but the root issues remain. US importers are pushing for more creativity and controlled reliable solutions to manage supply chain risk,” UWL President Duncan Wright said.

The service offers priority berthing at both origin and destination, and a dedicated equipment pool for suppliers in Ho Chi Minh City. This includes 6,000 brand-new ocean containers, with 40-foot-high cube and 20-foot containers already in the rotation. Predictability is assured, as schedules are published six months in advance, with two sailings per month.

Upon arrival in Seattle, those needing warehousing or distribution space can take advantage of UWL’s sister company, World Distribution Services (WDS), and its brand-new 300,000 sq. ft. facility near Tacoma, WA, just a short drive away from the Port of Seattle.

“In joining forces with UWL, an innovative and integrated logistics provider to American BCOs, we are confident that our ocean express solution will be compelling to importers and exporters who need a direct port-to-port, fast, and reliable service between Vietnam and the Pacific Northwest,” said Rufus Frere-Smith, Regional Head, Americas, Swire Shipping, which facilitates trade in more than 90 countries and across 400 ports. “Our partnership is built on a joint vision of responding to customers’ desire for reliable, safe, and innovative shipping solutions.”

Mr. Wright noted: “We have seen incredibly strong demand for this service already, which tells us that fast and reliable niche services are here to stay. Our relationship with Swire Shipping is critical to making all this work. Their remarkable 150-year history and robust knowledge of ocean shipping and strong Asia legacy, combined with UWL’s culture of innovation, brings this dedicated service to life.”

Mr. Frere-Smith commented: “We have deployed new state-of-the-art, fuel-efficient vessels that will sail at high speed, safely and sustainably. We are confident customers and BCOs will find this direct, express service to be extremely effective in shipping their high value products and getting to market quickly.”

The Port of Virginia® is the only US East Coast stop for ocean carrier Hapag-Lloyd’s reworked Mediterranean Gulf Coast Express (MGX) that will move cargo overland by rail to California via Virginia.

“This is an innovative decision by one of our long-time customers to take advantage of our efficiency and our rail reach into the Midwest,” said Stephen A. Edwards, CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority. “It’s a unique service, but it is indicative of a very challenging trade environment. We welcomed the opportunity to be part of the solution for cargo owners on the West Coast.”

The service began operating in mid-April with arrival of the Synergy Antwerp at Norfolk International Terminals. Nearly 1,000 of the vessel’s containers were moved via Norfolk Southern to Chicago where they were switched to another rail carrier that moved them to the ports of Los Angeles and Oakland.

The weekly service employs eight Panamax vessels. The port call rotation is: Livorno – Genoa – Barcelona – Valencia – Veracruz –Altamira – Houston – The Port of Virginia – Livorno.

Edwards said this is an important opportunity to introduce West Coast-based cargo owners and logistics companies to The Port of Virginia.

“Hapag-Lloyd is taking advantage of the present-day efficiencies here that are driven by a diverse, ultra-modern port complex that has an expansive rail reach,” Edwards said. “But what many companies on the West Coast may not realize is that we are investing $1.3 billion between now and 2025 to create more rail capacity, modernize and renovate two of our berths and convert them to an RMG operation (rail-mounted gantry), dredge our channels to 55 feet deep and widen them for two-way traffic of ultra-large container vessels. The Port of Virginia is building capacity for decades to come.”
The post Ocean carrier chooses Virginia for new rail link connecting the Mediterranean and US West Coast appeared first on Transport Advancement.

DHL Supply Chain, the contract logistics specialist within Deutsche Post DHL Group, is now offering its commercial customers new on-demand packaging solutions to make shipments more cost-effective and environmentally friendly. The AI solution OptiCarton helps to optimize the filling volume of boxes from an existing, pre-configured set of cartons and can even suggest the splitting of an order into several consignments to make individual shipments more cost-effective or reduce their carbon footprint.

With OptiCarton, DHL is not only responding to the current shortage in cardboard boxes and packaging materials in the market, but initial pilots also indicate that the solution offers customers additional benefits in the shape of shipping-cost savings of up to 35 percent and with an average of 15 percent. OptiCarton is of particular interest to commercial customers with large shipping volumes, such as e-sellers or online shops.

“Even though this kind of solution might sound relatively simple at first, providing packing instructions for individual e-commerce shipments in real time is actually quite complex. We are excited to offer a fully automated software solution that can help our customers optimize the utilization of existing pack sets with the power of artificial intelligence,” says Dietmar Steins, Executive Vice President Global Solutions Design at DHL Supply Chain. “Based on the products, volumes and sizes in question, the software not only suggests the optimal size of the outer packaging, it also provides individual, visual instructions on how to ideally utilize the space inside the box. It’s highly intuitive – and not unlike the well-known computer game Tetris. It may be a simple piece of software in application terms, but it certainly delivers major savings.”

According to initial calculations, an optimally pre-configured and well-utilized set of cardboard boxes can save as much as 50 percent in superfluous shipment space. This greatly reduces the number of truckloads, allowing commercial customers to save costs not only with regard to oversized cartons and filling material, but also shipping, by eliminating unnecessary transports. Furthermore, the solution can provide recommendations as to whether and how an order should be split up to optimize the shipment configuration, making the solution particularly end-consumer friendly.

“At DHL Supply Chain, we are continuously working to improve our services and adapt them to the changing needs of our customers. Digital solutions in particular are firmly anchored in our global strategy, helping us to operate more efficiently and sustainably. When you look at the increasing numbers of e-commerce and single-item shipments, it’s easy to recognize that on-demand packaging in combination with the optimized utilization of packing material and transport capacities offer incredible leverage when it comes to saving costs, reducing carbon emissions and improving the customer experience – all at the same time,” says Markus Voss, CIO & COO at DHL Supply Chain. “The main challenges for customers are how to maintain a reasonable spend on packaging and reduce the number of shipments damaged in transit, while optimizing their own transport capacities. OptiCarton can help them master all these challenges.”

easyJet has announced it is working with GKN Aerospace, the world’s leading multi-technology tier 1 aerospace supplier, to work toward reducing carbon emissions in aviation through the adoption of zero carbon emission technologies.

easyJet will support the development of GKN Aerospace’s Hydrogen Combustion (H2JET) and Hydrogen Fuel Cell (H2GEAR) technology, including exploring the options for flight demonstration, as part of the airline’s ambition to de-carbonise aviation.

Among others, easyJet will provide insights into operational requirements and economics.

H2GEAR is a GKN Aerospace led ground-breaking UK collaboration programme aiming to develop a liquid hydrogen propulsion system for sub-regional aircraft that could be scaled up to larger aircraft. Liquid hydrogen is being converted to electricity within a fuel cell system. This electricity efficiently powers the aircraft, eliminating carbon emissions and creating a new generation of clean air travel.

The H2GEAR programme is supported by £27M of ATI funding, matched by GKN Aerospace and its industrial partners. H2JET is a Swedish collaborative two-year programme led by GKN Aerospace to push the development of key subsystems for gas turbine-based hydrogen propulsion of medium-range civil aircraft. David Morgan, Director of Flight Operations, easyJet, said:

“At easyJet, we are committed to working towards a future with zero carbon emission flying. We know that technology is a key driver to achieving our decarbonisation targets, with hydrogen propulsion a frontrunner for short-haul airlines like easyJet. Cross-industry partnerships are key to developing these promising new technologies and we look forward to collaborating with GKN Aerospace to support bringing this technology to maturity as early as possible.” Max Brown, VP Technology, GKN Aerospace, said:

“At GKN Aerospace sustainability is at the heart of our business. Hydrogen-powered aircraft offer a clear route to keep the world connected, with dramatically cleaner skies. The UK is at the forefront of this technology. We look forward to working with easyJet and our partners, to develop and industrialise the breakthrough technology to fly aircraft with zero CO2 emissions.”

Championing the development of a zero carbon emission aircraft to de-carbonise aviation is a key focus for easyJet, and the airline is working with partners across the industry like GKN Aerospace, as well as Airbus, Rolls-Royce, Cranfield Aerospace Solutions and Wright Electric, to accelerate the development of zero carbon emission technologies and supporting infrastructure. The airline is optimistic that it could begin flying customers on planes powered by hydrogen-combustion, hydrogen-electric or a hybrid of both by the mid to late-2030s.

In November last year, easyJet joined Race to Zero, a global UN-backed campaign to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 at the latest. In joining Race to Zero, the airline committed to setting an interim science-based target for 2035 and to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, for which technology for zero carbon emission flying will play an important part.

In 2019, easyJet became the first major airline worldwide to offset the carbon emissions from the fuel used for all its flights and remains the only major airline in Europe to do so. This comes at no additional cost to its customers and the airline only supports projects that are certified by either Gold Standard or Verified Carbon Standard. This is an interim measure to address its impact on the environment in the short term.

Beyond carbon, easyJet is focusing on reducing plastic – more than 36 million single-use plastic items were eliminated – as well as reducing waste within its wider operations and the supply chain. The airline also introduced new crew uniforms made from recycled plastic bottles. With 45 bottles in each uniform, this has the potential to prevent 2.7 million plastic bottles from ending up in landfills or in oceans over the next five years.
The post easyJet partners with GKN Aerospace to accelerate adoption of hydrogen in aviation appeared first on Transport Advancement.

Eve UAM, LLC, an Embraer company, and Acciona, a global company leader in the provision of regenerative solutions for a decarbonized economy, announced a strategic partnership to accelerate the development of a global and sustainable Urban Air Mobility ecosystem. Under the terms of the partnership, upon the consummation of Eve’s business combination with Zanite Acquisition Corp., Acciona will invest US$30 million (€27 million) and will join the group of strategic investors that are currently supporting the development of Eve and its business plan. As part of the agreement, José Manuel Entrecanales, Acciona’s Chairman and CEO, will become one of the seven members of the Board of Directors after Eve’s listing on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), which is expected to happen in the second quarter of 2022.

“Whether we like it or not, the world’s population is increasingly concentrating in larger cities. Keeping the climate footprint of these urban areas at bay is one of the greatest challenges of the decarbonization process we are all engaged in,” said José Manuel Entrecanales. “Urban air transport models such as the one proposed by Eve can be very useful when considering different sustainable mobility solutions. Participating in a project as innovative as Eve will allow us to continue advancing along that path.”

“Our agreement with Acciona reinforces Eve’s commitment to delivering a sustainable UAM ecosystem, which includes not only our zero-emission eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle) but also the green infrastructure that will support this new way of transport. Its capability to build these infrastructures, added to its top credentials in sustainability, bring essential skills and expertise to the business that will help us to maintain our distinction in the market,” said André Stein, co-CEO of Eve.

The partnership will also benefit novel industrial initiatives in the development of a sustainable UAM ecosystem, including vertiports, power purchase agreements, battery charging solutions, and handling. In 2021, 93% of the ACCIONA Group’s investments were aligned with the European Union’s taxonomy for sustainable activities. The company avoided the emission of 13.4 million tonnes of CO2 (+1.5%) during the year, ending that year as the most sustainable electricity company in Spain and the second most sustainable worldwide, according to the Sustainability Yearbook 2022 published by S&P Global.

In December 2021, Eve announced plans to list on NYSE through a business combination with Zanite Acquisition Corp. (Nasdaq: ZNTE, ZNTEU, ZNTEW), a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) focused on the aviation sector. Upon the closing of the transaction, Zanite will change its name to Eve Holding, Inc. and its common stock and warrants are expected to trade on NYSE under the new ticker symbol “EVEX” and “EVEXW”, and Eve will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Eve Holding.

So far Eve has attracted a group of complementary strategic investors that bring an unparalleled set of capabilities spanning the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) ecosystem, including fixed-wing operators (Republic Airways and SkyWest), aircraft lessors (Azorra and Falko), financing (Bradesco BBI) and technology (Rolls-Royce and Thales) providers, as well as players in the defense industry (BAE Systems). The business combination values Eve at an implied US$2.4 billion enterprise value and Embraer will remain a majority stockholder with an approximately 82% equity stake in Eve Holding following the closing of the business combination.
The post Eve and ACCIONA enter strategic partnership to accelerate the development of a sustainable Urban Air Mobility ecosystem appeared first on Transport Advancement.
